I actually like the idea of a dot instead of a plane on the ingame map...so you have to use your in-plane compass....

+1 for the dot instead of plane...

-1 to get rid of it completely...

I don't know where I like this idea or not, have not made up my mind yet. But I don't see HTC implementing it. HiTech said a while ago that Aces High is about combat, not operating the plane or navigating.

P.S. Unless you really need it please don't ask me to find the quote.
"Now, if I had to make the choice of one fighter aircraft above all the others...it would be, without any doubt, the world's greatest propeller driven flying machine - the magnificent and immortal Spitfire."
Lt. Col. William R. Dunn
flew Spitfires, Hurricanes, P-51s, P-47s, and F-4s

I say keep it...

It's too much of a trouble to navigate in the artificial world. Too many hills and barns that look the same.

The main arenas are undoubtedly more about "the fight" and base capture, but most special events allow the players to experience many other aspects of WWII air combat including basic navigation. That's the idea behind a CM setting that can enable either the plane icon or dot. With the return of custom arenas, an option like this would probably see a lot of use.

like somebody else said.  you dont have to open your clipboard.  print the map then try to navigate, not hard to do.  as for user arenas, i think the point is more like private furball than a climb to 50k then go bomb something.

I suppose this might work in regards to the OP but isn't close to the idea of using a dot instead of a gps plane icon.

I fly in custom arenas several times a week and what I'm seeing is just as many historically based set ups as private furballs. I've yet to see anyone climb to 50k to do anything.

Wait...really? We have that? I know I'm new and all, but I've never seen this option.

dood try to understand this.  the only reason for ah is the "fight" with base capture being secondary.  and one more thing basic navigation is what we have now, you want it more challenging well then dont open the clipboard, print your maps and knock yourself out.  as for custom arenas not having the standard option, well with only a few players do you really want the challenge to be the "fight" or flying the airplane.  because if you want to really "fly the airplane" then off line is the way to go.

really wouldn't hurt to have a option in the arena set up, i don't mean client side but when you set up a custom arena for 16 players or when people set up events  :frown:

I think It should show ur dot only when u enter radar circle  of a friendly base that way you would awoid the long finals and landing at the enemy field lol  cool idea +1   also how about air traffic  control  ???   For example  if u in enemy territory  and not sure where to go there would be a tuggle in the radio bar so when u select it the ATC would give  u a heading to the closest  friendly  base    what u guys think???

there's an arena hundreds of miles wide with only 8 guys per side trying to find each other.  how much fuel do you think will be needed?  user arenas are meant for short flight furballing, not 2 or 3 hour missions hoping you can find something to shoot at.

as for the special events, think of guys getting lost running out of fuel, how long do you think they will keep coming back for the event?
