PR skins are not, other than the Mosquito Mk XVI as it is unarmed in all cases.

FR skins are allowed though, because they are armed.
Right, that's what the names FR and PR differentiate, my bad

For whatever reason the 'pink' paint job was used for low level FR birds.  the high alt, unarmed ones usually went in PRU Blue.

The Pink Spits were armed fighter Spits adapted with an oblique camera.  16 Squadron FRIXs September 44

Yes, now I remember regretting that the blue ones were unarmed.  Woulda made pretty good looking schemes for the game.

Always find it amusing in scenarios when it involves dessert battles the pink skin shows up on Spitfires.

The assumption being that is was a dessert paint scheme.

It has been said that pink is a very good camo color for in the desert.

Silence tells me secretly everything.

The human eye apparently doesn't handle pink very well, making it hard to see at distances.  It bleeds into the background colors I think.

Also used on ships.

Supposedly it made making out objects close to the horizon at dawn and dusk harder, as the sky usually has a reddish colour at that time.

The idea behind the pink Spitfire scheme was for low altitude reconnaissance on cloudy days near dawn or dusk. It was very hard to see this colour from the ground against clouds at these times of the day, while the cloud cover stopped it being seen from above. Also objects photographed on the ground had long shadows which made them stand out more.
