I don't own one, but have fired one.  One magazine, so take this for what it is worth.

Feels good in the hand.  Not super small, but not huge either.

Trigger pull is longer then what I am used to, but I prefer 1911s.  If you are a Glock guy, it will feel natural.

Gun was accurate and seemed well made.

If you decide to get the SR9 for the wife be sure to check if it is serial number 330-30000 there is a re-call for the trigger it will go off when dropped if the mod has not been made.  For some decent prices on hand guns and ammo check out www.rjbarr.com
There is a semi new judge out that is light, and very consealable, you only get 5 shots but if you are unloading a 410 into the area around a bad guy, you should only need 1 or 2.

I'm not a big fan of the Judges.  I own a Public Defender model.

The shot patterns spread very rapidly due to the rifling, so at any but the shortest distances, the shot density gets very thin.  In fact, with a bird shot type shell, from more then a few feet, you actually get a pattern that is donut shaped with the hole right at center aim point.

There are the special made ammunitions, like the PDX stuff, which is more effective.  But I personally would rather have a more traditional pistol with a higher capacity.  I don't want to have to be that close to the bad guy to defend myself.

Also, when I bought my Judge, I was buying it with my wife in mind.  Thinking that it would be easier for her etc etc.  She hates it.  It kicks pretty hard and isn't very pleasant to shoot.  She actually prefers my Taurus PT92 (Beretta 92 clone), and refuses to shoot the Judge.

She will practice with the 9mm.  The way I see it, if she is more willing to practice with the 9mm then that's what I am going to put into her hands.  As often as possible.

Also, I live in Illinois, where our government has determined that we shouldn't have the right to carry a concealed weapon.  So, concealability isn't an issue when choosing a home defense weapon.

I keep this handy for home defense too.

Just my opinion, take it for what it is worth.

I recently purchased a Baretta PX4 storm in .40 cal(full size) and love it. Baretta sells the same model in 9mm and in a compact version. They have a rolling barrel system that reduces recoil. My .40 feel about the same as my Bersa .380 Thunder. You can go to Baretta USA to see their full line.

Thanks guys,

They didn't have an SR9 for rent out at the range but did have an SR40.  So we decided to try it out.  Figured if she was comfortable shooting the .40 then all the better.  It didn't bother her a bit :D.  She shot most of the rounds through it, but I tried it some.   I've heard some complaints about the trigger, but I found it very consistent and about what I expected being a novice pistol shooter. So it looks like I'll be looking to purchase an SR40, now do I want a stainless slide, or black.

PFactorDave, unfortunately I'm in the same State :furious, thereby looking for a compact is silly at this point.

9mm doesn't kick too hard. Pretty easily controlable even to a first time 12yo.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

go with the black as it doesn't show so much at night and just looks intimidating during the day.

      here's mine.....

Compared to a regular 12 guage...  The kick is pretty nasty.  Fun to shoot though.

I think I'll probably get her an all black one.  What model is that one by the way?

that's a Beretta PX4 Storm .40 cal full size. They sell a compact version of it as well. They also sell it in 9mm and .45 cal. I paid about $500 for mine new in the box from Academy Sports. It comes with two 14 rd. mags and 3 changeable backstraps for the grip to accomodate most peoples hand. Mine is shown with the small backstrap. One of the things I like best is the rolling barrel system that reduces recoil and it can be field stripped in seconds for cleaning.  Just go to Beretta USA online to look at their full catalog.
