He's excellent practice to fly against, because if you give him anything resembling a decent shot, he'll shred you. However, I find if I set up correctly and have the patience to do my attacks properly, he's survivable, though I rarely come away without major damage. Most of the time after a run on 999000, I wind up dead sticking back to base.

there ya go. Rule # 1 when going against 999. If you DONT want to run into him. Only hunt buffs that are above 7K
Rule #2 If you absolutely must do something so foolish NEVER come in on anything even resembling a 6:00 shot.
Rule #3 If you do decide to take your chances. Always come in from the front quarters and do so VERY fast. Preferably exiting back toward the front quarters
Rule#4. Avoid him altogether unless you have to.
