Gunsights Apply Down
« on: November 29, 2011, 12:36:03 AM »
I know it's a whine, and it's dumb, but every time I reinstall the game, I have to go through and manually set all my gunsights to the ones I want.  It'd be way cool if I could set my top plane and select apply down.  99% of the planes I use the same sight in, there's only a couple I use something different.

Um... before you uninstall your game... move you sights folder with the plane setting files somewhere else...

then when you re-install the game, just re-place the folder and files...

Hold onto you're Settings folder too, that's the one that has all your controls and your head positions too iirc.

...sometimes there's such a thing as a fresh install without backup files.

[EDIT] -- and my AH Backup folder contains:

Maps
Settings
Sights
Sounds
stickdef
...and the all important maps.zip (which is custom maps)

Also, I've found new sights I grow a liking to and then have to set every plane individually.  Apply down seems simple, and useful.

Oh, well to reply to your OP, if you want to put the same gunsight in each plane just rename it to default and change the name of the current default. Then you can change a few in that 1%.

seems to me there are more than one 'default' in my folder and that comes with the game.  Apply down would be handy and useful.

They cannot all possibly have the same exact name and file extension and exist in the same folder. If they have a file extension besides BMP it won't work anyway. You do not have more than one default.bmp in your Sights folder. Find the sight that you want to apply to 99% of the A/C and rename it to default.bmp, rename the old default to something like default2.bmp.

only 1 default sight comes with the game. if you have more, then you did not do a fresh clean install. your insistence that applying the same reticle to all aircraft is wrong as well. some reticles are too big for the sight apertures and some are too small.

amazing that someone who thinks wasting time wandering around on the ground waiting for a rescue plane to appear is worthwhile yet spending 20 minutes applying a favorite gunsight to aircraft in the hangar is too much hassle.

Sights that come with the game:

Default.bmp
default2.bmp
default2_alpha.bmp
default3.bmp
default3_alpha.bmp
default_alpha.bmp

You have to remember, there are British, German, American and Japanese gunsights that come standard with the game...

Also, a new player may not have the wealth of knowelege you people are professing to have... so you know what would work really well for them, and be both simple and useful?

APPLY DOWN!!!

You do know you can change the default gunsight with a specific one, for example I use the revi gunsight, just make that the default and problem is solved.

Just take the gunsight you use on all the planes and rename the file "default.bmp".

Also when backing up your gunsights, there is a text file (or several?) that outlines in AH terms which gunsights go with which planes. Don't just back up the .BMPs, back up all the files.

If you want to apply 1 gunsight to all, as mentioned the best way is to rename the "default" to "default_original" and then name your "mygunsight" to "default. No need to change it in-game, as they already use it! It's just swapping out what they use.

Write a script to run against the sights folder to parse for every instance of the gunsight name in the (airplane.txt) files and replace with the name of your new (gunsight.bmp) file name. Those text files are what the game looks at to load your gunsight choice when you spawn. If you promise a bribe I bet half a dozen of this audience would write it for you.

Or some free programing text editor might let you highlight the (.txt) files for the fighters you want to change and replace every instance of default.bmp with tluafed.bmp in each highlighted file. You can do that while the game is running with it minimised to the taskbar. I work on gunsights offline like that in art programs.

The Internet is full of freeware tools to do things like this. Just look for them.

I would post a screenshot of all my cool backups.. but you guys obviously are just out to sound smart.

This would not only be helpful to me... but many people.  There are people over 70 in this game... do you think they have any idea what the heck a bmp is?  I bet they would grasp rather easily what apply down is.  I bet a squeeker who doesn't know how to do jack other than double click an icon could figure out apply down.

I'm not saying that you can't save this information, or find ways around it... but that just means exactly what my original post states... the game has an area which can be improved and simplified.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can manually trim a plane, why the hell did they code in combat trim?  Such a waste of resources that ultimately simplifies the game for the vast majority of players!
