Im looking for the same thing. but either a tablet that runs windows. or a laptop thats convertible to a tablet. I kinda like the second idea better and my reasoning on windos is any of the business apps I want to run all run on windows and Android doesnt have apps that do what i want yet.

AND I can run android on a windows system. But I cant run windows on an android system.

I just cant justify the pricetag of $1500-1800 for the one I want LOL

I hear you, for that price you could get a monster computer. In fact we just ordered our new desktop custom from my uncle (he owns a prominent computer store on long island) top of the line everything= 1300 bucks.

Im looking at getting a tablet as well. Although im looking at get one more for the aviation part since they are becoming so popular. So Ipads look like the way to go other then the price so I (my dad) is leaning towards the kindle fire. Anyone know about it? :salute

Cap1 and seanaldinho

the kindle is already out dated and not upgradeable. everything you both want is found in the NooK Color and you can get some pretty durable cases for it. it is about half the cost (around $200.00 +/-) of a tablet and actually has alot more versatility. cap1 if you buy it through best buy and get the geek complete protection plan you can get it replaced if you break it at work. its small enough to be managable and still big enough to read easily (7" screen), has built in speaker and wifi, a micro sd card slot and micro usb plug in.....

take a peak, it might be all you need wrapped up in one little short money package

Thing is too is Im only going to be using it for occasional browsing. but mostly for mobile record keeping and to do estimates with so I can print them out right in my van rather then hand writing them or emailing them later.. As I usually do most of my estimates at night. by the end of the day my handwriting can sometimes leave something to be desired.

alot of customers are very impressed when they learn I am giving them a written estimate right then and there rather then making them wait for an Email.
and its gotten me more then one job that way as it enables me to close the deal right then and there in alot of cases.

As an experiment to satisfy my own curiosity. I went on 10 estimates and asked if they prefered I just write them by hand a written estimate right then and there or if they prefered a "more professional looking" estimate that I could either drop off the next day or email them that night with.
9 of the ten preferred the estimate right then and there even if it was written out by hand as opposed to a "printed" or emailed estimate.
and the last one didnt care one way or the other. Of that ten I was able to close the deal right then and there with 5 of them. And two more decided to shop around a bit before finally deciding on me. and the reasoning of one of those is I was so willing to provide an immediate estimate in writing.

7 of 10 is a damn good ratio

any event. Really I just need it for text type stuff. with the rare but occasional screwing around or looking something up online. and I like the idea of having a CD drive built in as well as a real keyboard.

Tis would be perfect as it has handwriting recognition as well as everything else I want.
Pricetag about $1100

Wow thats a pretty good turnover. The next question would be how long would it take you to pay off that tablet? If you make enough to in lets say a month from the additional deals you make to pay off even a quarter (200 bucks of extra profit a month) of it then I think it would be well worth the research and money put into it.

And are you using company money or your personal money?

hahaha i am on my HP touchsmart equivalent to those tablets.... i love it!! i bought it for use in my tow truck while on the road, it worked great for the purpose. you can also get a small cannon printer (damn thing is tiny!) to use on the seat or dash mounted. you can get universal or vehicle specific mounts also. just make sure your tablet IS touch screen!! (not all are) and get a screen protector for it!!!

Granted it isnt ALWAYS like that but I do get most of the stuff I go after.

how long to pay it off. that depends. Here in the NE we're about to enter our traditional slow season which can be hit or miss or few calls at all between Christmas and Easter so My prices drop to meet demand and compete with the largely illegal businesses (whole other topic)
Hard to say. Could be weeks or months depending on business flow. For example I have a couple of large bids out now. One of which is a bid for work on one of the local Hyatt Regency Hotels which if I get it would make it all moot because the down payment alone is a very nice sized chunk of money That looks pretty promising based on our meetings. But they arent going to be ready to go till sometime next year. Whenever that is. and while it looks pretty promising. I know from experience not to count on anything till Im actually there and doing it.

Right now Part of its personal but it will all be considered company money as it will be money out of my pocket for something that will be used pretty much strictly for business. so the deductions is there. Still its just the cost. I just find it hard to justify to myself that kind of outlay for what Im going to use it for. And to be honest while it will make my record keeping easier because I will then be able to do it on the fly. Its just mostly for aesthetics

Yanno its funny. If it for one of my kids I probably wouldnt hesitate. I'll do a little research, decide what I want them to have then simply go buy it. But for myself. Im a bit more frugal. I'll hee and haw over something relentlessly. Go to the store and look at it sometimes a dozen or more times before I decide to pull or not pull the trigger. LOL

that's pretty smart actually. when people want something, they want it "now" not later. even if they won't admit such.

for me, as i mentioned, i need to be able to browse on the web. my information systems are all online. i could buy the old style books(which i miss a LOT) but they'd cost me several thousand dollars, and would take up massive shelf space. i could buy the dvd's, which wouldn't take up much room, but they'd bring me back to having to run up front each and every time i needed to look up another diagnostic......top that off with the fact that they'd still cost me a considerable sum of money.

and of course there is also the fact that i know me well enough to know dam well that i'm also going to use it for non-work stuff too. as long as i can access the web, to get to my information systems, and check my email, possibly a blog for the shop, i should be ok. gonna google the nook, and check it out. i'm generally not as hard on my stuff as most mechanics are, but then again, i can often be a clumsy bastage.......

for him, i think one single job could pay it off. for me, just the amount of time i can save in a month would pay it off.

Yeah I understand that and you know maybe it would just be smarter to keep hand writing it until you do have the money for it and hopefully by then prices will have gone down. So personally I would wait a little and see how the winter season works out.

I hardly ever buy myself anything and when my parents buy me things I ask for the bare minimum. But I wouldn't hesitate to buy them something I know they will use and enjoy.

Didn't know as I wasn't sure what the profit margin is and I don't even have a job but am looking at a paying internship with L3 communications. (Im only 15 so my options are kinda limited.)

Looks like it will do.
where'd you get it?

i got it from best buy. i cant say this enough about and big money electronic purchase......GET THE GEEKSQUAD COVERAGE!!!!!!! the full coverage will cover dropping it, or almost every other kind of accidental mishap. for a little less than a third of the purchase price your comp will be completely covered (hardware wise) for 3 years. my last work laptop i had to have them replace it due to drop damage 3 times, (saving me the 800.00+ i paid for it originally 3 times) i paid a little extra each time to continue the coverage on the new comp and i was good to go. you cant beat the best buy warrantee plan anywhere.
