Ship Gunnery Zoom
« on: January 02, 2012, 11:53:44 AM »
I've been away from the game for a year or so. Upon my recent return, I find that I have forgotten how, or can no longer, zoom my view from a ship turret to watch the shot fall on distant land or ship targets.  I believe I formerly used F3 then F8 then "Z" then [-] to view the target, but despite spending hours in game and on the forums trying to find the answer, I'm admitting defeat and asking  :headscratch:.

I know the feature has to be there (doesn't it?). Could someone tell me how?  Speak slowly, I am getting old  :old:.

I think it is "Z" followed by the bracket keys for in/out.

Tried that till I'm blue in the face.  Not working for me. Checked key mappings, view modes, etc.  I'm wondering if the capability was nerfed in the vehicle behavior overhaul.

Yes, Win7 64-bit (he answers with a sinking feeling).

Go into the "map controllers" or "map keyboard" sections of your clipboard.

Find the one that says, "toggle zoom on/off".

Set it where you want it.

At the same time find the ones that say "zoom in" and "zoom out".

Set them where you want them as well.

I think they are in the "view" area, but may be in "global" although I don't think so.

Thanks Melvin, but "been there, done that".  The zoom key "Z" and the in/out keys "[]" all work. For instance, in certain instances "z" will get me a fixed zoom level increase (a pintle mount .50 cal is one). In other instances, the bracket keys will give me a smooth zoom in/out.  An example would be using the F3 external view of an aircraft...the brackets will allow me to adjust my view distance.  The keys are mapped right and work, just not everyplace they used to as far as I can tell.

Try setting up a different mode.

My Mode 2 somehow got hosed with the gv update where the bracket zoom for the commander will not work nor will the c and v adjustments for the German and Russian tank gunsights.

I just make a new Mode 2 on Mode for and assigned an unused key on the keypad to switch to it when I up a gv.

Thanks Wrongway, you broke the log jam. The problem did seem to be related to mode switching. I started to setup a 3rd mode to use for vehicles and ships, but then started to wonder if the automatic mode switching was involved, so I disabled auto mode switching and set up keys for manual mode switching.  (I ended up decoupling number pad 1,2,3 from view and using those...I don't use them for view anyway). Now, when I manually switch to my original mode 2 via my mapped key (numpad 2), "Z" and the bracket keys are working as expected.

Of course, this just allowed me to move on to the next problem which is that my view is about 90 deg off of the azimuth the guns are pointing  :bhead, but I'll figure that one out...I saw it mentioned elsewhere in the forums.

Thanks again!  :aok

That's interesting that it is the auto-mode that is screwing things up. I'll have to see if I de-select auto- and choose Mode 2 manually zoom works again. Then, off to the Bugs Section.

By the way, I use the / * - and . keys on the keypad as they don't do anything else anyway. Just in case you need those view keys some day.

UPDATE:  The manual mode switching worked for me for about a day.  Apparently whatever was corrupt is corrupt again, because I can no longer zoom.  There was probably a reboot in there somewhere, but no messing with mappings between the time it worked and didn't.  The "Z" key does still work for a fixed zoom percentage in some GVs, and the bracket keys still work for zooming in and out on an external view of a bomber for instance (and to zoom back from the gun mount when in a ship gun), but once again, no zooming in on a distant shore or sea target.

I see nothing hinky in the mappings. For that matter, I didn't see anything that had changed when it did work besides unchecking auto mode switching.

I am still fascinated about the "do you have Win7" question.  Is there an OS related answer lurking out there?

The only things that could be considered "fancy" about my system are that I run dual 1920x1080 25" monitors with AH on monitor 1, and I have another controller Besides the Saitek Z52 in the form of a Belkin Nostromo N52 which shows on the controller setup list but isn't mapped to any functions...I don't use it in AH. I don't see as it would matter, but the mouse is a Razer Naga Elite. Both the Nostromo and Naga have resident mapping software running configurations, but neither get mapped in AH for anything aside from the usual mouse axis stuff. Unplugged the Nostromo, no change. I do not have the Saitek configuration software running any profile because it causes me to lose the pinky switch mapping for view modification.

OS is Win7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I guess I'm staying out of 8" turrets till I get to the bottom of this.

Conclusion:  I got this to work finally through the use of a bizarre workaround that I saw mentioned in the forums to fix other control behaviors.

If I open the Win 7 Game Controllers dialog and hit "properties" for the Saitek X52 Flight Control System, I get the panel below. If I LEAVE THAT OPEN while I play Aces High, I can always get my zoom toggle and in/out keys to work one way or another.  Sometimes I need to go to "Plane" mode while in a vehicle, and sometimes the reverse, but I can always find something that works if that window is open....yea.

I didn't see this thread before.

I'm wondering if part of the problem might be the difference between zoom in a gun position and outside view zoom. In the first case, you zoom in on the bandit or ground but in the second case, you're zooming in on the bomber instead. It matters a lot, the zoom effect is much different. Oh, and there are combinations to help confuse you along the way.
Easy in-game again.
