Gunsights for P-51D

First, I have been searching through posts so please don't tell me to take that step, already attempted it.

Second, I understand the basic concept and realize that different sights serve different purposes such as aiming for air to ground rockets. Is there an optimum sight for the 50 cals on the P-51D? If so, why? Or is it really just flavor difference? If so, any good threads on how to properly use them?

Any recommendations or thoughts would be appreciated.

PS Same question for the Fw-190D-9, and would that be the same for all Fw-190 models since they shoot the same 20mm???

You need to ask exact questions concerning the parts you want to know about. Since you have used the search function you have as much knowlege as most seasoned players. Other wise just use a dot and be done with it.

For 45 degree bombs and rockets drop 1000-1500 yards out, put a dot at about 50Mil down from center. That infers a 100Mil diameter ring. Put one 25Mil down for closer. Flying in at speed level about 1000 feet up you will drop when the target just passes under the bottom of the 100Mil ring.

The optical reflector gunsight was basicly a 30-120Mil ring for most countries with a few additional bells and whistles. It's primary purpose was to give you a range estimation tool and focus your convergence point to achive maximum effect. Until 1943 most P38's had a 30Mil ring and dot. That was the shot pattern out to about 1000 yards.

Fly against the offline target auto level about 250. Set the target for 200, 300, 400. You will notice when you pull the trigger your nose pushes down about 2-5Mil. You been shooting short on some of your passes lately? The La's push 2Mil up........

Since were on the topic of gunsights, you wouldnt happen to have some for the P-38J, Bustr?

The P38 started out using the N2 then N3 gunsights. The original ring was 30Mil. In 1943 all N-x gunsights were upgraded to a 70Mil ring. The Lynn L3 originaly had a 30Mil ring. In the 1A version it had a 50Mil ring with stadia marks below the ring for rocket launching. I will bet they were every 10Mil down to about 100Mil and about 20Mil wide.

Not very exotic in a gamers kinda universe. I usualy put in a vertical dotted line down the center of the ladder with a 10Mil gap while the stadia marks to each side are 10Mil wide each. When you go on zoom this brackets your ground target and gives you a line to hold on center.

Does anyone build their reticles in 512x512 so they can use Mil for their building units? Or does everyone just take screen shots on full zoom offline and use kentucky windage for the size of their rings and stadia line locations? Hitech optically corrected the gunsight FOV a few years back to 1Mil=2Pixel in 512x512 format.
