To use or not use Catalyst?
« on: January 02, 2012, 05:46:29 AM »
I've been wondering if there is any real benefit to even letting the CCC run while i play AH.  I do use the overclock utility and have most things set to "application preference" but, beyond the overclocking, is it maybe hurting more than it's helping?

Depends on the rest of your system stats... most likely any benefits you gain from overclocking you will lose due to the resources of CCC running in the background.

Personally I use Ray Adams' ATI Tray Tools... does (most) of the same stuff that CCC does at a fraction of the footprint.  I'm running v1.7.9.1531 but I haven't updated it in a while...  www.guru3d.com

Depends on the rest of your system stats...

just like Tigger posted...... your PC build / specs  will be the depending factor on whether you can gain anything visualy verses your PC taking a bad resources hit and hurting your overall game play / views

I personally have CCC on some of my PCs  and also, like Tigger have opted for Tray Tools instead on some other PCs in the past, because of the smaller footprint/resources being used.....

regarding Aces High & CCC or ATI Tray Tools.....  Aces High only requires the ATI  or the Nvidia Display Driver and nothing else....... Aces High's built in Graphics settings & abilities will make use of your Video Card's AA availability as well as other things regarding shaders etc.....

at least that is how I understood Skuzzy explaining it several years ago.......    I do not think anything has changed since the new graphics engine was put in to place, although I could be completely wrong.....

If your Computer is Strong enough, you can run any Graphics software suites ( ATI / Nvidia ) and not really notice a difference in whether it is hampering your Aces High game play..........  but for those with lower end computers, I would recommend to just use the Video Card's  Graphics Display Driver only, and not install any video card tweaking software

hope this helps

thank you, that's what I was wondering. My system is lower end but I usually maintain 60 fps at mid level settings in game. I'll just do away with the CCC.

You don't need to use CCC with ATI cards, it's just bloat ware.  You can use Ray's ATI Tray Tools instead with a much smaller resource footprint and it have more options to fine tune your card.
