CPU Voltage
« on: January 10, 2012, 01:43:13 PM »
Looking at Speccy today for benny haha's for my temps, and i notice it says my CPU is running at 3.2 Ghz, but it should be running at 3.33. in my BIOs it says 3.33 Ghz (as does NEweeg, and the box, and Intels site). Assuming I believe BIOS? what could cause this .13 GHz deficit between BIOS and Speccy? even if Speccy is right and my BIOS is wrong, would I notice a difference in performance between the .13 GHz?

What make and model of CPU?  What does your machine report for FSB frequency and multiplier?

That's not voltage it's frequency. Your CPU normally throttles down to use less energy.

If you don't know the basics you probably shouldn't overclock any part of your PC. You risk ruining it and you won't see any significant  difference even if you're successful.

I wasn't asking for OC'ing tips or know how, I was asking why it would read different in one program over BIOS.

i7-970. not seeing the FSB Freg. and mult. in BIOS  :noid

and BIOS is saying 3.20 for the frequency as well as Speccy. the throttling down makes sense, but it remains at 3.20 even when im playing BF3. should be operating a little harder while playing something such as BF3 one would think....

Sorry, I mixed you up with this guy.

As many know, I just recently got a new video card, partly to say I had it, partly to gain performance and run BF3, which I now have installed. BF3 also brings me to my question. I know if you aren't careful with an OC, you can easily damage the device, and I have never OC'd before. MSI has an overclocking software, but so does ATI (its a 6850), then theres my BIOS. Factory the card came OC'd with a 85 MHz core clock over the regular MSI 6850 Cyclone. I can run BF3 on High, and theres some video lag on Ultra. Some Reviewers claim that if they push their card they can easily perform with 6870's. I only want to do enough OC'ing to run BF3 with Ultra settings, however having never OC'd anything before I don't want to push too far. I also want to use a software that would be ebst for OC'ing, or is my BIOS the best bet?

According to this page at Intel, the i7-970 is rated at a frequency of 3.2 GHz with a bus/core ratio of 24, so that's on a 133 MHz bus.

That 3.2 GHz is the *maximum* stock speed.  Many Intel chips can reduce the bus/core ratio on the fly to run slower and cooler.  Yours will not exceed 3.2 GHz unless you overclock.

Well, there is that "turbo" mode thingy.  If you're running a single-threaded application the CPU might be able to shut down the un-used cores and run one core at a higher speed.  The i7-970 "Max Turbo Frequency" is listed as 3.46 GHz.

The i7-980 is 3.33.  Maybe you mixed up 7 with 8.
