22 kHz 16-bit mono is what works best with AH. The game will create the stereo effect for you.
Here is my experimental videos made with the different types. The stereo version sounds fuller but the 3D positioning is out of alignment and visual anomalies are beginning to appear. 5.1 Surround is just non-useable.

I think 8-bit went out with an old version of DirectX sometime in the lifespan of XP.
