Need advice on how to sort out deterioration
« on: January 29, 2012, 09:48:19 PM »
I have a lenovo Y570 ideapad with 6meg and a NVidia GT 555m  Got it in October and AH played fine though sometimes the display would go fractally.  The stability of the game seemed to get worse as time went by, since the latest update there is  an occasional screen freeze/stutter, otherwise 59 60FPS.  Playing just a minute ago it froze up blank screen and had to start task manager etc.  The graphics don't do the fractal thing with FSX or IL2 or Rise of Flight though I admit I haven't run those very long. (dont play video games really)  Can anybody recommend a utility to check my graphics card? I would like to confirm or eliminate it as the cause of the stutter and fractal problem. Settings: 1280 x 1024 no anti aliasing 1024 texture. Graphics under the options are: obj detail middle of slider, ground detail 2/3, display horizon checked, under advanced: buildings cast shadows and bump map terrain checked nothing else, shadow texture 1024.  The OS is windows 7 64 bit.

There are still a couple of performance bugs they are ironing out with this release.. I'd give it another week or so before jumping to conclusions just yet...

Sounds awfully lot like overheating related artifacting. Considering it's a laptop that's not far fetched at all. A laptop is usually very poor and short lived choice for gaming.

Pop open the box and eyeball the heatsink.  My wife's laptop accumulated a lot of dust and hair into what looked like a thick pad of felt, blocking the airflow between the fan and the fins.

If you can, vaccuum this up. It's way faster than trying to pick or brush it out. You also shouldn't try breathing any of it in (not so good for ya).

Dustbusters with a narrow extension tip are wonderful for this sort of thing.

Canned air is the best for clearing out the laptop if you can't pop it open for cleaning. Vacuum cleaners usually can't give enough suction to remove the toughest dustballs because you can't make the nozzle airtight to the vents. Canned air however you can spray with accurate force.

But sometimes the only way to remove the gunk is to open the case and pick by hand.
