I'd rather have the icon range lowered to 3k and no icons under 1k. or make it so if you want to not have people see your icon you cant see theirs

6K is just under 3nm. In real world I can spot an airplane the size of a cessna 10nm out and I can identify the type by the time he is 5 or 4nm out. The aircraft we fly here are a lot bigger and therefor a lot easier to spot. It's a lot harder doing that on a computer screen so we need icons. If anything the icon range should be increased.

I don't think that you are understanding Debrody's wish.  I don't want to put words in his mouth, but it sounded to me that Debrody's idea would still have icon at that range, but just not as ..... ummmm..... noticeable...  :uhoh

As for anyone who wants to shorten the icon range..... that should be a BIG negatory

With what some have offered here in this discussion, I see for the first time an alternative for those from both camps

There could still be the standard range for icons, but less information on them or one might have to zoom in to identify more clues, or even whether or not it is friendly or not.  If it hasn't been mentioned before in this thread, changing color from a neutral grey icon and fading or turning to the "red flag" enemy icon, could turn the tables when flying troop carriers or may lessen the attraction of gang / horders.

I think you misunderstood my post. I was saying that as 6K it's not very hard to spot an aircraft, so the icon should stay fully visible. His idea is good but for it to work properly the icon range should be increased.

I stand corrected Machfly, after reading it again I see your point.  The only real world comparison that I can try to bring to the discussion comes from my front porch.   :noid

I must live in the area of a popular training pattern for the nearby bases.  Since I was very young, I always looked squinted eyed towards the sky in search of the aircraft buzzing my eardrums and in earlier years bouncing my bedroom from sonic percusion booms.  I learned quickly that their sound was a false indicator of direction to look, since they were miles from where I heard the sound by the time it reached my ears.

Now, to the point, I have seen these babies practically maneuvering nearly tree top (or as close as I would like to see them).  Close enough to make out a figure in the cockpit and at that distance, I could identify that aircraft from a picture, or a close variant.  The paint scheme and markings were clear.  But for the most part, the aircraft that are in visual range are little more than wing shape and engine contrails, with hints of cockpit location.  Those aircraft, would leave doubt about identification from a chart of pictures.  Taking into account, differences in obvious paint schemes and markings, I may be able to narrow my choices with a better accuracy.  This is in reference to an aircraft flyine directly above my porch.

Summary, I agree that HTC has given us a standard setting, that we can agree or disagree makes a good attempt at elliminating graphical downfalls.  Would it be possible to give custom arena setups different options to the degree of ID rather than just icon on and range indicator?  I know that changes have been made in the past from the plus / minus range indicator to current system.  How would increased "fog of war" impact the game?  Would it be worth the gamble to allow custom arenas the chance to dabble with their setups?  Will they bring more whine  :cry or more cheese  :D ?
