I stand corrected Machfly, after reading it again I see your point. The only real world comparison that I can try to bring to the discussion comes from my front porch.
I must live in the area of a popular training pattern for the nearby bases. Since I was very young, I always looked squinted eyed towards the sky in search of the aircraft buzzing my eardrums and in earlier years bouncing my bedroom from sonic percusion booms. I learned quickly that their sound was a false indicator of direction to look, since they were miles from where I heard the sound by the time it reached my ears. Now, to the point, I have seen these babies practically maneuvering nearly tree top (or as close as I would like to see them). Close enough to make out a figure in the cockpit and at that distance, I could identify that aircraft from a picture, or a close variant. The paint scheme and markings were clear. But for the most part, the aircraft that are in visual range are little more than wing shape and engine contrails, with hints of cockpit location. Those aircraft, would leave doubt about identification from a chart of pictures. Taking into account, differences in obvious paint schemes and markings, I may be able to narrow my choices with a better accuracy. This is in reference to an aircraft flyine directly above my porch.
Summary, I agree that HTC has given us a standard setting, that we can agree or disagree makes a good attempt at elliminating graphical downfalls. Would it be possible to give custom arena setups different options to the degree of ID rather than just icon on and range indicator? I know that changes have been made in the past from the plus / minus range indicator to current system. How would increased "fog of war" impact the game? Would it be worth the gamble to allow custom arenas the chance to dabble with their setups? Will they bring more whine

or more cheese

?
