Last night on Top Gear
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:51:06 AM »
I was pleasantly surprised that they came to the US to do a piece on NASCAR.  I personally didn't like much anything about it aside from the bump-draft until a few years ago when I saw Tiff do a segment on Daytona for 5th Gear which I think was a bit more enlightening.
Also, I've suspected that Richard is a Closeted American for some time.

So what's the British impressions on this?
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

pretty good I thought, although hammond driving the nascar was disappointing. pulling faces and shouting whooaaa! doesnt tell us as much as describing how the nascar feels and handles compared to big-hp road going V8s or other racing cars (both of which hes had plenty of time in.)

Joey's time was very impressive, and the chinese stig was actually funny :aok

I though the NASCAR segment was well done, I am an F1 fan, and agree with the part about maybe "Americanizing" F1 a bit to make it more exciting.  Maybe that will happen with F1 coming to Austin, TX this year.  It's just all the stuffy rules like "no celebratory donuts after the race"   that annoy me, let them have some fun.   By the same token I think NASCAR and IndyCar could learn a lot from F1 when it comes to safety, they are really cutting edge when it comes to safety and the record since Senna's death shows it.   Still not a NASCAR fan though, I'm sure if you're there at the track it's a great party and tons of fun, but watching it on TV just bores the daylights out of me.

Oh, and after the Montoya bit I kept waiting for them (in the interest of full disclosure) to state the fact that JP Montoya is a grade-A prima donna jerk...  guess they forgot.

In China I was cracking up more at all the Chinese knock-off cars then the Chinese Stig.   Especially the dialog about the Chinese X5 knock-off and the Chinese court system ignoring any copyright claims, then that crazy Chinese 3 wheel deal.  :rofl

As far as the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" lap times.  I don't believe the give an accurate portrayal of driver talent.  There are too many variables from day to day and season to season to call the laps equal.  Things like track temp, air temp, tire wear, brake wear, humidity, wind etc.. vary too much from day to day, even the car has probably changed some as the engine and suspension gets broken in, and then starts to wear out.  Obviously those at the bottom just suck, (watch Jeff Goldblum's lap he's absolutely terrible, did the whole lap in 3rd bouncing off the limiter) but I bet there is very little in it between the top 8 or so. Personally I would wager that Rowan Atkinson is still the better driver, just because I know he actually races quite a lot.

he had ideal conditions - very cold and dry. nevertheless you could tell it was going to be quick because it looked so smooth, his lines were good and you could hear the tyres loaded right on the edge of grip in all the corners.

I hope they do sprint cars or 4 wide top fuel next time they stop by.  I'd love to see the what stig can do with 800HP on a 1/4 mile dirt oval.

If anyone's curious, this is what 5th Gear did to present it.
