Indicated Airspeeds for Gliding "dead" stick
« on: February 12, 2012, 08:47:36 AM »
:xIt was interesting to see the response to one of my squad mates thread on re-starting damaged engines and all the different replies! He has a point, but I would like to ask Aces Hight for a chart which shows best glide speed, with dead engine, on different aircraft in this game. I have found in this game, 105MPH IAS seems to be best glide speed for B-17G. Fuel starvation in the 17 happens quite often due to air combat and have noticed that in other aircraft as well. Best glide speed being one in which the aircraft moves forward with least amount of altitude lost, or know as best glide rate IAS. In the 64 years that I operated "real" aircraft, best glide speed was one of the first figures that I wanted to know! Some aircraft I flew, such as the B-29 had charts which we could consult because of the effect of weight at time of complete engine failure,(Never had to consult it in 29, just new it where it was if I did need it). There are 3 things in aviation which you have to have, but can never use, altitude above you, runway behind you and fuel left in that red truck sitting over by the hangar! All kidding aside, we all have had to make dead stick landings in this game and it woulld be nice to have charts just like our fuel charts and etc. P.S. don't think that large 4 engine aircraft do not have complete power failure! If you do, consult Federal Aviation Agency web site, check incident reports on power failures for large aircraft, one of the prime examples, a Boeing 747-200 which lost all engine power, but glided to a successful emergencie landing at a airport!

HTC is a very small company I doubt they have time to do this.  You may want to do the research yourself, then post then post your chart here to share with others.  Many players have done things of this nature. I.E. Odd's "fuel burn time chart" and widewings list of planes that have drop tank mounts in the the flight model w/ or without tank.

    Just a suggestion

Auto climb speed is a good place to start for best glide speed. Also it's better to be a little fast than a little slow when gliding.

Auto climb, Alt + X only gives you a attitude of the aircraft, which is a good suggestion for beginning players who not pilots. The reason I brought it up is this, a dead engine in a P-51, 1/2 sector and altitude of 8,000 feet AGL,(roughly 12.5 miles from friendly base, which is under heavy attack), but there is another friendly base 18.5 miles away! Do I have enough glide ability to reach the friendly base not under attack, or do I have to run the "gauntlet" trying to land at base under attack. I will run some tests this week on the P-51, B-17and B-24 and pass along what I find out for anyone who is interested. I have a "plotter" which is accurate so the figures I come up with should be good. I will assume 50% fuel in all test aircraft, and no ords of any kind on board.

Best glide speed is at L/D max, which is also best climb angle. Best climb rate is a higher speed. I would guess that auto climb gives best rate.

There will be two glide speeds.  One gives you the slowest descent/most time before impact.  The other covers the greatest distance (this is the one you normally want).

105 for a B-17, at least a real B-17, is way too slow.

Any player can hit auto climb, look at their speed, and get a good idea for their minimum glide speed without having to know anything else.  It's not exact but it's useful.

I wish somebody would ask for something useful to everybody like the best angle and speed to vulch the runway for all the different airplanes.  but with subsets for the different ammo loadouts.  I mean the speed would probably increase on the dive if you have 2 1k bombs attached to you but decrease faster when you pull up to gain altitude.  this info would be used more.

When I needed to figure out the best glide speed for a Spit14 in a specific configuration I did a series of trial and error tests and came up with 135mph. The autoclimb will put you at 175mph.

See this thread: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,308176.0.html

That will be better than picking a random number out of the hat but still inaccurate.

Auto climb is really auto speed. It is not an attitude (that is "auto angle" -- a different mode). It will adjust up or down to maintain a set speed.

Just FYI. You were describing it wrong.
