I found this on BBC as I scan the internet every day, and its quite an interesting read, enjoy!

It's 70 years this week since the first US air force officer was killed in Europe, following America's entry into World War II. By heading the list of 30,000 USAAF men to lose their lives in the European theatre, Lt Col Townsend Griffiss became a footnote in the history of the war. But who was he and how did he die?

Another one of the first Americans to die in WWII was Billy Fiske. He was an Olympic Bobsledder with 2 Gold medals.

Ironic that it was safer to fly across occupied Europe than approach the English coast. Just shows how good the early warning system was at the time.
