Cap,

Do you have a shop camera? If not it would be a cheap and wise investment.  Nothing beats a he said, she said like a picture.

If I was still in business I'd be using it on every job!

    :salute

i've got security cameras now. 2 in the office, and 1 in the shop. i'm upgrading soon to 2 in the bays, 4 outside, and keeping 2 in the office. in addition, i keep a digital voice recorder in the office. i record nearly everything audio in the office.

also, i have a digital camera and a digital camcorder. i use those to help educate my customers. if they're not here when i find a problem, i'll video or photo it in order to show the customer why i sold them what i sold them. i figure someone that knows exactly why i'm charging what i am, is a customer that'll come back over and over.

i was just looking at a contour hd camera, which is pretty small, and great quality videos.....those can be headstrap mounted, which would be good for recording the entire job.

I sincerely hope that you disclose this fact to everyone that you speak to while in the office.  Otherwise, any evidence obtained this way will be inadmissible, at best and at worst, could be considered eavesdropping if someone wanted to push it.

Same goes for the cameras.

I think a sign is sufficient, but I would double check to see what Camden's rules say about it.

I understand the need for them where you are and I would hate to see you lose out because of it...

new jersey is a one party state. only one person in a conversation has to know it's being recorded. since i'm doing the recording..........

i've been burned in the past by people that deny saying what they said, or claim they never ok'd something. mechanics almost always lose when it's a "he said she said" kind of thing.

Ah, so you have checked  :aok

I found out that my sister has been recording conversations with her ex.  I told her that she had better tell him that she is doing it, because PA is not the same as Jersey in that respect.   :cry

yea.......and i have to be..and am....careful when i call a customers cell phone. if it's an out of state number, but they live here, i'm not sure of the rules then, so if i turn on the recorder, i let them know.

i may upgrade to a commercial automatic recorder. if/when i do that, i will have one of those recordings playing saying that the call is being recorded.

Underground Racing messed up a customer's Viper and it came back to them multiple times whereupon they only fixed the symptom (damage) and not the cause of the problem.

I got the car, changed airflow to the radiator back to stock by removing the air/air intercooler up front and added an air to water intercooler system with ice reservior in the rear of the car, and fabricated some fashionable aluminum stuff for the tank and nitrous system.

He took it back to underground and expressed his displeasure that they never fixed the issue that was causing his engine overheats...........so underground threatens him via e.mail that they had video of him talking about going to the strip club near that shop and would send it to his wife.

Huge backfire and we reaped many super high end customers from that.

i don't have my cameras or recorders for that purpose. i also would never threaten a customer that way.

i've got a friend with a high hp viper that had his suspension done somewhere down there in florida.......spent a ton of money on it. i think this is gonna turn out to be a 9 second street car....possibly low 9's, as it's faster than his coupe.....which should run high 9's.......but i think he's in the process of suing the place right now for something they either screwed up, or never did but charged him for.

there's a way around that too.

if the conversation is in a public place, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy, therefore, a recording could "accidentally" happen.  :noid

2-nails and a 5"x10" sign near the main entrance to the establishment - good to go.  (which actually brings into play the fu!@ PITA issue of treating the ADA accessable entance as the main one or an alternative main entryway, but anywho)

The law is more (almost specifically) for phone calls, where they have to do the "quality control/training purposes/recording to cover our asses" disclaimer before turning it on.  Single-party use of recording devices for asset protection, ala private or business, passes through courts easier here than fermented tofu (with a distinct line drawn at entrapment or using it against the unwary party for personal gain).
