Depends on two things: age and social situation.

If you're an old fogey who has very few friends remaining (with all due respect, of course) then obviously it's gonna suck.

If you are for example, a teenager in grade 10 (like, ohhh... myself ) then it's good-- you're able to talk to friends, see what's happening, and I actually find it good for school work, too. I've got groups for my classes, and the teacher is a part of it and posts the homework there every once in a while.

As much as I really dislike FaceBook, I must admit that I have been able to use it to improve my photography business.  It has uses.  That said, it absolutely amazes me that anyone, repeat anyone, gives a rats turd about the day to day minutae of other peoples lives.  I'm really not a people person though.

My wife spends a fair amount of time on FaceBook, and now Pintrist...  She enjoys it in her spare time, who am I to say that it is bad.  To each his own, I guess. 

Twitter, I find totally useless.

Facebook is mail + chat all in one. It's a very easy way to talk to friends or advertise. I personally like it (although I'm not obsessed with it like some). But I agree, anything else beyond FB, mail, or Skype is useless.
