Right about this time of year, when the weather gets really hot and the backwaters start to rise, we always ride down towards the Mississippi River, what we call the "bottoms," and go snake hunting up and down the roads.  We all have our own different taste in weapon selections...shotguns, handguns, rifles.  I prefer a 12 gauge for proper mutilation.  Favorite target...copperheads and cotton mouths!

typical "american" mind set...kill anything you don't like.....or understand.....if it were not for snakes this world would be over run by rodents, that carry all sorts of disease's that will kill man...yet what disease can we get from snakes????   not a friggin one....

I say all you who kill snakes...spiders...and the like, for no other reason but to kill it..... are cowards.

I edited it to add "for no other reason but to kill it"

because yes sometimes you need to destroy something that is a threat to life.

Considering, even after our cowardice acts, the number of snakes we see every year on our four wheeler trails, on the sides of the roads, camping areas, etc.... I don't think we're just severely hurting the population, or even affecting it at all.  And while snakes are not a direct threat to our lives at all times, what's to stop them from biting one of us, or one of the kids, when we walk upon one without noticing it before it's too late?  This has been going on for years, and I am surpised that it hasn't been stopped completely because killing snakes in the state of TN is illegal no matter the circumstances.

I'm with Ink. Snakes attack out of defense for their personal space. they dont just attack to attack, unless they are hunting. and I assure you, unless you stumble across a rather large snake you be hunted by one....

So if it is "eating your chickens" a valid reason?

So if it is "eating your chickens" a valid reason?

nope....it should have been taken out in the woods and released.

make the chicken coupe snake proof(as much as possible)....the more snakes you have in the area the safer you are.....

I seriously cant stand people who just kill for the sake of killing....

I absolutely love all snakes, to me snakes are integral to our well being....

something that literally saves us, how moronic is it to just kill it.....as far as the few people that die from snake bites.....well 100,000 people die from alcohol a year..why not put up an up roar to stop that??????

I have owned many, many, snakes including a 15' retic that could easily kill a man.

lastly.... not one of the snakes I have had,  pretended to be a rabbit so it could get close to me to befriend me then bite me....I have far more respect for animals then most people.

All animals have right to live on the property I own. The feral cats and woodchucks (groundhogs) have a right to live there also, just as long I don't find them and have a gun in my hand. The woodchucks, heck I set 1 1/2s for them also......................... ........

yet what disease can we get from snakes????

Salmonella

They are also known to carry tapeworms. (bad for the digestive system)

And they can carry roundworms. (bad for the digestive tract as well as lungs)

They are illegal to kill where I live, plus we have none that are very dangerous to man, although a large Pine snake is something to be reckoned with.

why you respect them and clean theyre cage on a regular basis. my girlfriends sisters boyfriend has had snakes his whole (hes only 21), and has yet to get any sort of sickness from them. granted, hes young, but after years of owning multiple snakes at a time he is far more likely to get salmonella, tapeworms or round worms then someone who passes a snake in the woods.... just saying.

Not hard to tell who lives in the city in this thread

Whatchya trying to say?  It's the country boy in dis har thread dat can't tell the difference between a gardner and a rattler.  :devil

(This here slicker use to remove up to 5 rattlers a day as a teenager staffing summer camps and such.)

Word of advice Tupac: nothing against what you were in your right to do, but where one ("harmless") snake slipped ino the chicken coop, so will another... the past and the future, which one do you think most everyone quietly cares about and which one do you think most everyone freely volunteers an opinion on?

Salmonella will kill you just as dead as the plague.

Anyway, I love Pine snakes. They've been known to eat entire nests of wood ticks.
