the difference between the 1A and 1D iirc is just the gas tanks and the ordinance

The 1-D is a bit slower and doesn't seem to hang as good.

1A  Better vis of courrse, better accel, better climb.  Due to the higher seat position you also have an improved deflection shooting capability.
1D  Carries ord, pylons slow it down.  Reduced endurance due to elimination of all fuel tanks except the main (fwd of cockpit).  Most stable imho though hardly a factor.  I rate it least tough the three as modeled because of vulnerability of fuel system.
-1  Slightly better turn radius but accompanied by the most abrupt stall characteristics of any Corsair making it dangerous to push the envelope low and slow.

There's no shortage of ppl who know how to fly the 1A, but there's only one person I see landing kills in the -1 over a long period of time.  To really get into the weeds of how the -1 is different, Specs is your guy.

I think the -1 is a helluva dogfighter, especially in the scissors, even though  it may be a little lacking in the vert or acceleration, but i prefer the -1 over the 1A, just for the fact some people dont take it seriously, but what do i know im a B38 pilot ;)   :airplane:

I wish I could learn the Corsair series, my biggest problem is the instability when flying - it has a tendency to simply roll over during a turn, Its more common in the F4u-1 and F4u-1a where the F4u-1D does not do this.

I try to lay off on the stick when In a turn - normally thrashing it around in a 109/ki-84 cannot be done in a Corsair.

Beautiful bird though, props to those who can fly it correctly.

On rare occassion when I have to take off from a carrier.... I might chose the 1A or F6. I prefer the -1A to the -1.

Ink if you ever want practice shooting down big ol' 38s give me a holler. I'm always up for getting shot down multiple times..... sometimes all in one flight.  :rofl

38 can be a fun fight, very surprising in the right hands, considering its size..which I think is its worse aspect....damn thing is so big....Stevie wonder could hit it   :rofl

I know of a few that used to fly back in my earlier years that flew the -1 religiously, but, yes, there's not many -1 pilots

I prefer the -1 over the rest. What I do is set elevator trim a notch or 2 for the turn fights brings that nose around much quicker, not to  mention I think it builds E great in a dive not to mention not to bad in a slow turn fight but you do have to use a lot of rudder.
