Krusty, that makes sense. Is this a simple program fix, or something more detailed then?

the manned 88s really show up how badly the auto puffy is implemented.

they do nothing to aid fleet defence and do nothing to promote combat.

until they are properly modelled either:

 1. dont allow CVs within puffy range of the shore, or
 2. reduce puffy range to whatever the minimum CV-shore distance is, or
 3. make their lethality 0, or
 4. make them to fire randomly within range at medium alt.

I like #4 it would look nice.

I imagine a rather large and fundamental change. They got around doing any of that so far, so adding it all in would be a lot of work.

Point is, puffy ack should have little chance of hitting a rapidly moving, jinking plane. Fighter or bomber it is just not realistic. For a buff group at 15k making a 220knt straight line with no course or speed adjustments, they should get hit far more often then they are currently.

Agreed; even with that being said the chances of getting tagged by puffy (I feel like I'm referencing a dragon.....) in a bomber at 15k traveling in a straight line 220 knts (roughly 254 mph, 372.5 ft/s) would still present a hard target to hit considering travel time from barrel to where the target is supposed to be when the gunner aimed and fired.

---- this below is close but not exact -----

The 5" 38 Cal gun shoots at roughly 2,600 ft/s with a ceiling of around 37,000 ft. On a straight shot (straight up) it will take 5.7 seconds to reach it's target. to hit a target moving at 254 mph (in theory) you would have to fire 5.7 (more realistic would be 6-6.5 seconds) seconds in front of the target. that's if you managed to keep it tracked in front of you while the ship is rolling in the ocean with momentum (god forbid if it's negative momentum)......

Yes, this is a whine...all the same stuff.

I'm in a Dora at 15k, CV group is a small white streak way down there. The puffy ack starts as it should be, distant but enough to let you know it is there. I drop my nose, speed climbs to over 400knts, taking evasive action around 6gs for sustained turns. And in general I have turned away from the CV. I am not loaded with a bomb on some suicide CV hunt mission.

The programming for puffy ack needs some more work. I sense AH has tuned it down a bit. What I experienced is that regardless of alt drop, speed increase and rapid direction changes with high g loading the puffy ack simply got more accurate, and I am putting more distance between me and the CV.

I made it out of this one with only 1 gun out of action. It seems to me that when you have one burst of ack, you drop a couple thousand feet and change your direction greater then 90 degrees the next burst of puffy ack should be a few thousand feet behind and above you. This needs to be fixed. If I continue on a straight line, makes sense it gets more accurate. When I am rapidly jinking...

...6g's???...WOW...an f-18 can only do about 7.6...

The F/A-18? I'm pretty sure it can take more than the 9Gs the pilots are limited to.

thomace- The F-18's old maneuver G-limit was 7.5 it has been changed to + 9 G-limit for maneuvers.

2,600 ft/s (790 m/s) new; 2,500 ft/s (760 m/s) average

every 10k ft you're looking at about 4 seconds if the velocity were to stay the same (which we know it doesn't). I had a whole bunch of info yesterday, but it is easier to get this chart from Wiki. It's right so long as it hasn't been changed from since then...

Range with 55.18 lbs. (25.03 kg) AAC Mark 49 (792 mps)
10° 9,506 yards (8,692 m)
15° 11,663 yards (10,665 m)
20° 13,395 yards (12,248 m)
25° 14,804 yards (13,537 m)
30° 15,919 yards (14,556 m)
35° 16,739 yards (15,298 m)
40°17,240 yards (15,764 m)
45° 17,392 yards (15,903 m)
AA Ceiling 37,200 feet (11,887 m)
---

The elevation range are something along the lines of (-5º)-(85º)

When coupled with the Mark 37 Fire Control System, used on most US warships built between 1939 and 1946, these guns were also effective in the AA role.  For example, during gunnery trials in 1941, USS North Carolina (BB-55) was able to repeatedly shoot down drone aircraft at altitudes of 12,000 to 13,000 feet (3,700 to 4,000 m), about double the range of the 5"/25 (12.7 cm) AA Mark 10 used on older ships.

 :aok

My numbers were just for a visual. The way I see it (I could be wrong) but HTC has two choices for implementing/fixing the puffy:

1. Make it a simple cosmetic entity

or

2. Ramp it up a bit and make all aircraft above a certain altitude (Perhaps 7K) think twice before steering their crate through a maelstrom of puffy.

I prefer option 2 because I like the gut wrenching feeling of suspense when you are over a target and you are tempting fate to smite you down before you get your ordnance drop over target. I like it even better when there is a con on my six and I am in bomb sight mere seconds from ordnance release knowing that I am going to get shot up but only hoping that I can release my bombs and get to the tail gun before it happens. It's one of the experiences that draws me back to play each night.
