SSD Firmware update
« on: May 21, 2012, 05:14:42 PM »
Couple months back I got a SSD, why do I "need" one? I dont really, but I didnt want to set up a RAID configuration with my OS on it, as well as all my other data. I have a image  of my OS on my RAID setup, so if it crashes the world isn't over. anyway, I Go to update my Firmware and it doesnt see the drive in the updater. no biggie, I'll make sure my drivers are up to date. they are.  :headscratch: hmm...what now? Scour Patriots FAQ section and they recommend to update my BIOS drivers if I'm using a Marvell controller, which I am. the issue is the update on the gigabyte site for my BIOS update is a BETA. Couple questions. If I update to the BETA will I have to do anything in the near future to prevent issues? If not, will I lose my BIOS settings when I update? It wouldnt be hard to go through my BIOS and make a copy to my HDD (Yes, my board gives me the option to do this incase of failure), but then I would still have to reset everything to how it is now, correct?

I'm willing to try anything that wont destroy my settings on anything. I have firmware update 3.3.2, and the most recent is 5.02. wouldnt mind having the most recent firmware update, considering when I'm not home my girlfriend puts the machine to sleep when she finishes and the drive has a history with other users of crashing after sleep/hibernation. would rather not risk it, and the firmware 5.02 addresses it better.

SSD FIRMWARE 101:

a) ALWAYS HAVE THE LATEST VERSION.
b) ALWAYS CHECK TO SEE IF THE LATEST VERSION BRICKS OR DESTROYS DATA FIRST. (online forums)
c) ALWAYS START READING INSTRUCTIONS IN REVERSE ALPHABETICAL.
d) ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR DATA ON MAGNETIC STORAGE FIRST.

You have just been educated on how to get the most out of your SSD experience; have a nice day!  :D

a conflicts with b since if there's a problem you cant always have the latest version.  and b just because it doesnt happen to somebody else it doesnt mean it wont happen to you.

I would just back everything up to an external media and keep using the system untill (if) it shows a problem. With a beta bios update you open a whole new can of worms that may render your computer inoperable in the worst case. Bios update should always be a last resort when other things fail. You may lose your bios settings in the update but if you're not overclocking that's not going to matter since you probably use the default settings now anyway. The only thing you may have to do is to reset the boot drive selection if you have multiple harddrives and the default drive is not the boot drive.
