Weird Computer issue
« on: May 31, 2012, 08:57:27 AM »
(I am not exactly sure if this should go in O'Club or Hardware and Software, seeing it is an issue that doesn't involve AH)

I can't help but to worry about a new problem my PC has gotten since I had to replace the PSU and Motherboard. (the PSU failure was an odd one as it was providing the right voltages and current, but would not let any PC boot up. Out of precaution I also changed my board out as well when I got my new Power Supply back in February of this year.)

The weird issue I am having now is once every couple of months my PC will fail to boot, It will not give a BIOS beep, and will display "..." in the upper left of the screen. followed by it shutting itself down. trying to restart it yields it giving its normal beep and merrily going into windows and will continue booting normally until it does this again in a couple months.

The biggest issue is I just can't seem to find anything wrong with the system.  :headscratch:
Tried Prime95, Memtest, Intel's 'Burn test' , checked SMART on HDD several times and everything passes without a hitch.

So I have to ask as I think I have exhausted everything I can think of that can be wrong. :bhead Any ideas of what could be going wrong?

(If more information is needed, Ill be glad to give it, I just don't know if there is a post size limit.)

Did you update the BIOS?  Sounds like it is hanging up prior to POST.  Check to ensure all wire connections are tight.  A Dxdiag report would help.

I have not updated the BIOS.

What could I use to put up the DxDiag? could I just copy and past it to this board, also how much of it is needed?

when you replaced the mobo, was the replacement the exact same make/model as the previous mobo?

Actually, no I didn't get the same model for both the PSU or Mobo.

for the Mobo I went from an AsRock P55 Extreme to an Asus P7H55-M Pro

I didn't have any issues when it came to windows, surprisingly. Just confirm the serial and swap out drivers and its been rock solid... well other than this issue that every couple of months it will fail to boot, exactly once, before going back to normal.

(as for the PSU I went from a OCZ ModxStream Pro 700W to a Corsair Gaming Series 700W)

I mainly want to make sure that this rare problem isn't something more serious in the making.

Try updating the BIOS, especially if you used the disk that came with the MB.

Alright, will try that once I can find my USB or one of my old drives (I read that ASUS needs a FAT32 formatted USB or Hard Drive to update BIOS?)

of course, if this isn't a serious issue. May take the time to learn more about this as I have always been hesitant with Firmware or BIOS updates on devices, due to the risk of screwing something up.

also thanks for the responses so far. didn't know the original BIOS version may have a slight stability issue.

My Asus uses a program to check for updates. Then it updates if one is available.

May have to check into that. Right now I am preoccupied trying to revive an old Dell Inspiron 2650 for my niece to learn computers with. :)

(I gotta say.. who the heck designs a laptop where only one of the DIMM slots is actually accessible, the other you have to take half the laptop apart to get too!  :bhead)
