The machine was good with the first install for 3 or 4 months. at least. How do I know if I overwrote the boot sector when I reinstalled? I did a format, that would delete it, no?

Any way to check my motherboard sata controller for failure signs just to be safe?
formatting does not reset the drive. you have delete all existing partitions then reset them.

could be a bad sata data cable, bad sata connector on the drive or the mobo.

You guys are getting information piecemeal and cannot really find the issue here... as you just found out I think.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

erase all exsiting partitions with the windows 7 install disc then re-create them. you don't even have to reboot to do it... you built that system, i'm surprised you don't know how to get rid of a partition in the windows install menu.

anytime i had an os issue, a format and reinstall did the trick. when i get a moment ill do that and chime back in.

Formatting does not erase the boot sector. Neither does erasing partitions.

You either have to force write over the boot sector using the windows rescue console (which would cause all data to be lost on the drive) or try to use a boot sector repair tool such as Avira antivir boot sector repair tool http://www.avira.com/en/downloads

But before you start to mess with the boot sector, it would be better to try a known working harddrive in the computer to rule out single hdd failure or mobo controller / cable failure. Try plugging in a new hdd with another sata cable, if problems continue then your mobo is the one with problems. One should also not forget even bios may be infected.

First thing I'd do in that kind of situation is that I'd download and burn f-secure linux rescue disk http://www.f-secure.com/linux-weblog/ and perform a full system scan using it. That should detect the most obvious viruses at least and it lets you check the mbr. And if your computer fails even running from the cd, then it's indication you have memory or mobo problems. This you can then test by running memtest86+ which also is free to download.

Not wanting to rebuild my C:, I threw in MRI Customizer. Ran the updates, machine restarted after, and Firefox works again. With my luck just a band-aid until the wound begins bleeding again, but I dont have time this week to rebuild C:, so its good enough for now. Hell, not sure when I'll have the time to rebuild it. 3 bay garage to clean, which is destroyed inside within the next week, just so I can pick up 3 Willys Jeeps and begin the tedious process of making one out of 3.
