Graphic artifacts with a HIS AMD HD 7950
« on: June 07, 2012, 10:55:06 AM »
Ok were do I begin..... I just recently got a HIS AMD HD 7950 gpu. For the past month has been running great. Lately I have been getting random graphic artifacts in the game. I don't get the artifacts  any of my other games that I play. The artifacts show up very rarely, maybe one or two for just a split second every few minutes. I tried some trial and error and found i don't get the artifacts when I reduce the video settings to 1024 or 512. If anyone tells me to just play on 1024, I will growl at you. ;-)  I bought the card to max out the setting which I got close with this card. I have run furmark tests with no problems. The card reaches 80°C on the test but only reaches 70°C while running AH. I do have my computer and gpu over clocked but according to all stress testing everything is stable.

is anyone else having this problem? I will post Dxdiag when I get home tonight.

The artifacts are caused by over driving your card. You even proved it by turning it down. The fix is easy, buy a better video card.

If the temperatures are really OK, maybe back off the video card overclock a little bit?  <shrug>

My PSU is a gold rated Seasonic 750watt. I cannot remember which model right now but I did run a calculator and it has enough to run a second gpu if I want.
The artifacts are solid blocks of a dark color for a frame or two that stretch from center of the screen to edge in different shapes, or maybe stretching between two planes.

If the game was stressing the card would I just lose frames per second, rather than creating artifacts like you would get if you over overclock the card?

it's not the power supply. the artifacts are telling you the card is malfunctioning in some way. properly cooled and not overclocked that card shouldn't get over 65c constant while in ah even after a long period of time. might want to check the heatsink for buildup of some kind and check the airflow in your case...

The artifacts you are describing are normally associated with video memory problems, either due to heat, or failure, or drivers.  Possibly any combination of the three.

Did you change the settings on the video card. Can't remember which one I changed but it did the same thing.

I reduced my over clock a bit but I have not had the time to play aces high for any length of time to see if it worked. such a busy time of year. I am hoping to be able to get on tonight to see if it worked.

It would appear the damage has been done.
