Cable Management
« on: June 08, 2012, 07:59:01 AM »
My new PSU is a charm, but the cables are everywhere! My case is a full tower Dell but there are no holes in the side where I can wrap the extra cables to. As of now, I have about 6+ cables loose hanging in my case. They are all sleeved but not modular. I can't tie them to the top of the case (where the PSU is) because I have nothing to tie it to. Only thing I could've done was use the ties to wrap the extra cables together.

Anything I could do?

titanic, it's going to be a bit of a cluster but, you can fold the remaining wires and use a cable tie to tie them to the main mobo power line, just don't pull it too tight in case you need to use one of the leads for something later.

Drill or cut some holes in the metal tray that your MB is in, and run the extra cables behind the tray.  Then zip-tie them.

It's all in how much time and effort your willing to spend. Anyone can make a system look like TilDeaths, as long as they get the right parts and tools and take the time to do it right (though I'm sure TD has it down to a science  :aok )

If your willing to take the time it really isn't that hard to do. If cooling and cleanliness is important to you, take the time. If not, stuff it in there and hope for the best!

But my case has barely any space =\. Remember, it's a Dell mini tower. I put all the similar cables and tied them together. Maybe I can somehow tape the extra cable to the top of the case.

So is it a full or mini?

Taking off the right side panel and stashing the extra wires behind the mobo mounting panel has always worked for me.  Sometimes the panel is tough to put back on, but anything is possible with the correct motivation.

Mini tower. I'm not at home right now but a rough estimate:

The motherboard is on the left side of the case, with maybe an inch between the metal and the MB.

The PSU is at the rear of the case, at the top, touching the top, with the cables dangling down to the bottom of the case. The space between the the MB and the right side of the case is about 6" or 7". Enough for a GTX 590 but just barely. I'll take a picture of it when I get home.

Basically there is no way the cables are going behind the motherboard, it won't fit. I think I'll just see if I can't tape it to the top.

Dell generally doesn't give you space for cable management.  Best bet is to tie wrap them together as best you can.

I just put a double pole, single throw momentary switch on the cat 5 cable and put it right next to my keyboard.

Oh.....you mean INSIDE the computer.
