Plane comparison report.

I am wanting to do different compairisons against the P38GJ&L but i dont know what i want to start with. My reson for using the P38s is 1.) my favorite plane of all time. 2.) It was used in all theaters of combat in WW2. 3.) Lastly it was used by numerous countries.

So my question to you what plane should I compair it to first?

All used Allisons. All used by the Army Air Corps. Probably the G vs the P-39Q and the P-40N.

Its a great plane to have as a favorite plane of all time.  Some great books out there about it, too.  Used by the U.S. and saw action in ETO, PTO, MTO.  But not sure it was used much by other countries.  It was kind of an expensive, high tech airplane.  For exampe for as much equipment as we provided the Russians during the War, I don't believe we gave them '38s or '51s.   And the British evaluated the Lightning but passed on using it I think.   Australia, France and China used some photo recon versions though.

You might compare the P-38 first to the aircraft you're fighting it against in the main arena.

Soviets had a Lend-Lease P-38 that was used as a demonstrator.

The Brits had them but they were very underpowered versions of the a/c

Its an okay plane,I'm more of a fan of b17's though if I'm picking a buff.

You know its rare fighter plane with a control yoke rather than a stick.   So guys really into realism but control yokes to fly it in AH.  I think it was Norm somebody, but I haven't seen him in game for a log time.   I really respected that level of commitment to the plane!

The 38s sent to the Brits were sans superchargers as they were being protected from outside eyes. The Brits tried the normally asperated 38s and deemed them not powerful enough. They were returned to the US.

I'm not aware of one being sent to russia. If it was I'm sure it was sans supercharger too.

The book "Lavochkin's Piston-Engined Fighters" (Red Star Vol 10) by Yefim Gordon contains the following information on a Russian Lightning;

"Several months before the beginning of the La-11's flight tests GK NII VVS obtained an example of the Lockheed P-38L-1-LO Lightning twin-engined fighter. Its evaluation, which was completed in April 1947, showed that, despite the Lightning's high all-up weight (almost twice that of the La-11), its range with drop tanks was inferior to that of the Soviet fighter. Other performance figures, with the exception of the radius of turn and service ceiling, were also lower."
