Drop Tanks In WWII.

   All this time most of us thought paper mache was strickly for arts & crafts.  :O

Impressive.  I always thought they were made of a cheap alloy.

There are one, maybe two of those that have survived.  One is on the P51 at the USAF Museum.  I believe there is one paper tank in a collection somewhere.  Jack Rousch ended up making a mold from the one in the collection to fabricate some for the warbird 51 owners, so you'll see some fiberglass replica's now and then on his "Old Crow" P51B as well as some of the warbird P51Ds

Interesting little yarn about the development of drop tanks, I've no way to corroborate any of this:

... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB
