City of Hero's to Shut down Nov 30th.
« on: October 04, 2012, 04:44:18 PM »
On the off chance that some of you actually played City of Hero's/City of Villain's...I only just now discovered this...

http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/news/news_archive/thank_you.php

Tis a sad day. :(

Some of the things I'm going to point out that DID NOT help:

1) Enhancement Bonuses.

You received a set bonus for enhancement sets when completed.  What I DID NOT agree with was that you KEPT those bonuses even AFTER you have removed them for other enhancement sets.  If you have the enhancement set on, you get the bonus.  You don't, well, YOU DON'T.

2) AE (Architect Entertainment)

People went from playing the game (albeit partially), to not playing it at all.  I remember when I became a little active just after AE's launch.  AE Farm this, AE Farm that... :bhead  There was ALWAYS an AE farm running.  People would join the game, go straight to AE farming to 50.  Granted, there was farming before then, BUT it wasn't as easy to get to and even cost more for those who wanted to do it.  More often than not, those who were farming to 50 were players with numerous 50's already with a few noobs here and there.  Generally, folks would encourage a new player to actually play.  After AE, it was different.  Encouraged the new player to go to AE... :bhead

3) Unlocking of Epic Archetypes at level 20 and available to F2P players (with purchase of a pack).

It was best when you had to level a Hero to 50 to unlock the Peacebringer and Warshade.  Same with a Villain.  Had to level one to 50 to unlock the Widow and Solider.  You couldn't unlock a Villain Epic by leveling a Hero to 50.  You had to level a Villain to 50 and vica versa.  Another bit, to level just one character to 20, matters not which side there are on, and unlock BOTH side's Epics???  RETARDED! :bhead  The other bit is that, providing that a F2P player bought the little pack, they could use the Epic's. :bhead  Should be a VIP in order to use ANY of the Epic's... :bhead  If you let your account go, then your Epics are locked till you pay.

4) Power Set Proliferation.

:bhead :bhead :bhead :bhead  No...just....no... :bhead :bhead :bhead :bhead

I DREADED this day...  I knew there was a fairly good chance it was going to happen, when I decided to pop in for a little bit and discovered AE and Power Proliferation.  Shortly after, learned of the level to 20 to unlock Epic's. :bhead

I can only hope that the CoH community is somehow successful.  I have many a good memory of City of Heros/City of Villains, met some awesome folks there.

Wow I find it hard to believe it has been almost 38 days since our last path. We should have release another 38 versions by now  :bhead

Too bad this game gets closed. It was the only MMORPG that I enjoyed. Never had a 50 character, I am a true alt-a-holic.

The reasons for closing it are not clear though. There are several conspiracy theories out there.

When it comes down to it, it's about the money.  NC feels that they are not making enough money from it, or they wouldn't have decided to shut down Paragon Studios.

The things I listed above are just some of the things that did not help it any, since they ended up losing so many of their long time players.  Pretty bad when I became the leader of all SG/VG's I am in due to the people in them quitting because of the things I listed above; and I would be inactive for a few months at a time.  Those SG/VG's I were in were long time players, a lot of them being around longer than me.  Really a cool group of folks as they kept me in the SG/VG despite the fact that I can be inactive for such long periods of time. :)  I think the longest inactive period I went through was almost a year.  Truth be told, I was surprised to see that I was in all of the SG/VG's when I became active after that.  They were all still kicking around and generally having fun.  But as those 4 things listed above started coming about, that's when I started to see less and less of them on.  The real hits came with point 2 and 3.  We lost about a quarter of our number with point 1.  We were steadily losing those due to point 4, but fairly minor.  The MASSIVE hit came about with point 2 and 3.  A lot of us tried to stick it out with point 2 coming into play, but it was a bit much for most of them.  3 pretty much sealed the deal, and with that, I find myself the leader of every SG/VG I'm in, despite ME being so inactive.

Truth be told, I was inactive because I took CoH/CoV for granted.  It was one game I didn't see falling ANYTIME soon and therefor, could pop in and out at will.  Get a bug to play my EMP/Dark Defender (which is a classic build)?  Hopped into CoH for a spell.  Want to work more towards some badges with my BS/Regen Scrapper (My 1st Lv 50)?  Take a jog for a week.  I did have a goal to have Lv 50 Epic's, my PB being the 1st one of the Epic's I planned to get to 50.  In fact, she has ALL of my Inf from ALL my Hero's on her.  My intent was to level her to 50 then probably work on my TW/Regen Scrapper (one of the powersets I was really enjoying :D).  I also intended to work on my Gunslinger a bit while doing this.  Didn't want to "burn out" on my PB and TW scrap.  I would have probably work on my Solider as well during this time.  One of the other things I didn't like was how they redid the attack animations for claw scrappers (which also affected Widow's). :bhead  That one bugged me to no end, which actually forced my to change my Night Widow into a Fortunata.  Just couldn't wrap my brain around the UGLINESS of the attack animations. :bhead

All in all, I doubt that there will be an ability to launch CoH/CoV servers using a different company as I'm SURE NC won't allow it, using legal BS to keep it down. :bhead

They could shut down Champions Online (hell, it went F2P in less than a year if memory is correct) and divert that to CoH.  I've messed around with Champions Online a little bit and just did not agree with it.  In my opinion, City of Heros is better, PERIOD.  Now, it looks like I won't have a choice and will have to look more into Champions Online. :(

I played the game ages ago right when it was released, I stayed when they introduced epic classes (peace & war). I loved the concept of the game, it was pretty and I enjoyed the way classes and powesr were chosen and enhanced. Travel powers were awesome!

I don't remember what max level was back then I want to say 40 or 50, and I maxed a bunch of my toons (AR/DEV blaster, ILL/KIN Control, FIRE/ICE Tank, defender, scrapper etc.) I had a blast.

Why I left/Drove me away, I had many friends join this new WoW game. ;) CoH got very repetitive all interiors looked the same, AI was ok at best (I never felt challenged). Granted I left just as Villains was released and never went back, but I am sad to see it go.
