Man Pulls C-130 Across Runway
« on: October 06, 2012, 12:51:34 PM »
I live near Moody AFB and I thought this would be worth sharing.

Valdosta, GA - It takes a pretty strong person to pull even a small airplane, but what about a huge cargo plane across the runway?

Strong Man Mark Kirsch pulled a C-130 Hercules at Moody Air Force Base Friday morning with little more than a thick rope. It weights more than 1,000 pounds with big soft tires that make it even harder to move.

He is pulling the beast along the runway to say 'thank you'. It's part of a program called "Pulls For Our Troops".

"I tour the United States going to different Air Force bases through out the airshow season. Figurativley and literally pulling for our troops," said Mark Kirsch, professional Strong Man for 'Pulls For Our Troops'.

Friday's showing was actually just practice. So if you want to see him do it in person, you will want to come out to Moody's Big Open House and Air Show the 27th and 28th of this month.

Lol I laughed at that too, but civilians will be civilians.

"Empty weight: 83,000 lb (38,000 kg)
Useful load: 72,000 lb (33,000 kg)
Max takeoff weight: 155,000 lb (70,300 kg)"

:rofl

The 1,000lbs thing is amusing, but I laughed at this first.  :lol

Maybe they define "small" or "pretty strong" differently then I.  But I wouldn't say you have to be pretty strong to pull around a 152, 172 or DA20 or even a SR22, just average.  Heck I know a guy in his mid 70's who still pulls out his 182 Skylane by himself at least once a week.

I used to be based at Moody back in the early Eighties.  We could move a Phantom with two guys by hand there, of course they had high
pressure tires.  The tough part is stopping them  :D

Since I got out in 1984, I'm going to cheat and use Wiki weights for the F4E  :aok

Empty weight: 30,328 lb (13,757 kg)
Loaded weight: 41,500 lb (18,825 kg)
Max. takeoff weight: 61,795 lb (28,030 kg)

AF cadets used to relocate various static display aircraft every once in a while.  After a couple of expensive incidents though they made it a wash-out offense so it doesn't happen anymore.  One time the F-4 got away from the cadets while it was going down the bring me men ramp, and it careened through a parking lot.  Can't remember how many cars it hit but it nearly launched off/over a 40 ft tall wall down onto the parade field at the far end of the parking lot.  The other time the cadets somehow managed to wedge the F-16 inside one of the open dorm "quads", and then nobody could figure out how to get it back out.  The engineering department supposedly modelled it mathematically and determined that it was impossible to get the plane where it was, and just as impossible to get it back out.  The class responsible for the prank had to rent a huge skyscraper construction crane and lift the F-16 up out of the top of the 6-floor building.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
