BURIED SPITFIRES
« on: October 17, 2012, 11:06:56 AM »
Saw this article earlier, thought it was worthy of a repost.  Seems the British Gov is going to recover quite a few Spitfires that they buried to keep the Japs from getting them.....

Good that there actually seems to be positive progress. Can't wait to see what they find.

Incidentally they weren't buried to hide them from the Japanese despite what it says in the article. They're late model Spitfires buried near the end of the war because they were surplus to requirements. Mk VIIIs and Mk XIVs. Both models are really quite rare. Well they were, not any more. :airplane:

60???  I hope they are able to salvage enough of them to get 12-15 of them back in the air.  I wonder if there are some P40's and other such aircraft buried in those parts of the world?

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if all of the ones they dig up are able to be put back in the air. These are all zero timed complete aircraft that were sealed up very well.

The last I heard the number they think that might possibly be there may be above 100.

Took them forever to come to an agreement, glad it's finally moving forward.
