My bad, I forgot about the HDMI sound carrying ability. Didn't think that anyone would seriously want to hear AH sounds through those tiny 0.2W speakers

Motherboard sound circuits have developed significantly during the years I've been playing AH, so again, without knowing the mobo it's hard to tell what the onboard sound quality would be. The best sound circuits have a separate shielded board, the second best have the circuit shielded. The 5.1 circuit on my trusty GA-EP35 sounds good enough through my 5.1 Medusa headset, the background hum is audible only without any sound source. Tried a separate card with same results.
As per the original question, "Do I
need a sound card" it depends on what you're going to do with your rig. For AH and other games you might rather want something that'll kick the crap out of you when a bomb explodes, which means the mobo's onboard sound accompanied with a ghetto blaster would work fine, for a music studio pc you'd definitely want something more sophisticated.
