Collisions?
« on: October 09, 2012, 04:05:54 PM »
Has there been a change in collision model?

I got rammed by an enemy fighter and in any stage was I aware that he was behind me or that I was attacked. My tail and wing was cut off and I received message "you have collided". There was no damage to him for what I saw.

Not the first time recently when there has been unclear collisions where I have received "you have collided" message when I have not even seen the other plane.

Years ago the collision model put damage to both planes in collisions, but this? I thought it was changed so that if you had a visual on the ramming plane you too took damage.

Ironically, I just started a post about this, in the General Disussions.
It would seem to me that a collision had been detected, so damage should be calculated and assigned to both players.

No.

The collision model works perfectly.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'see'. But you don't have to literally see a collision to have it hapen. An enemy can be going up to you in your blind spot, so you won't 'see' him by the time the collision occurs on your Front End.

(I recall a player who claimed to be able avoiding collisions just by looking away (virtually), becaude he was told "what you see is what you get" and "if you see a collision on your FE...")

If the collision detected on your computer you have collided.

If the collision detected on the other guys computer he has collided.

If the collision detected on both computers then both have collided.

Due to lag what you see on your computer/front end IS NOT what the other guys sees on his. So while you roll out of the way at the last second and avoid the other guys computer may still detect a collision.

There hasn't been any change to the collision model Charge, you have just been flying better and avoiding them.

Your computer is responsible for assigning damage to your plane in the event of anything intersecting your model.  It works like that on every computer running the game.

The disparity comes from no two computers being able to exactly replicate the placement of every object in the arena.  This is caused by total time displacement between your computer, the server, and the remote computer.  That time will cause a measurable difference between when you see the plane and where the other player sees your plane.

As it stands, you have absolute control over your plane being damaged from an intersection.  You avoid the intersection, and your plane never takes damage.  If you fail to do so, your plane will take damage.

In any other implementation, you give up control over the damage assigned to your plane.

It's possible until the November 6th election cycle is finished we will be seeing increased internet contributed issues like more frequent collisions. Warping and less hit sprites where we know from experience they should happen.

Problem with collision is just because you see a collision, doesn't automatically mean the other guy also sees a collision.
You ->  :bhead ->    Other Guy-> :bolt:  -> :devil     :lol
If you took damage from a collision it mean your computer saw you   collide. The other guys computer is also doing the same thing. If he flies away with no damage, it means he avoided what he saw on his screen (which is not the same as what you saw on your screen).

Back in the good ole days of free H2H, frank3 used to run 4vs4 engagement rooms. We'd all fly off in formations (zekes vs wildcats, 190s vs P47s, etc etc). Icons off, we'd engage and occasionally have some friendly fire incidents (KS was always off). Was all good fun.  :joystick: :aok

On one such run I remember us talking a great deal about friendly collisions and the chaos it'd cause if he turned them on. At the time I saw myself flying at 200yards off his left wing. When I asked he said he saw me at 800yards off his wing. So what I see and what you see are more often than not, not the same thing. :D  :salute
