German Type 24 Torpedo boat.
« on: November 06, 2012, 07:51:00 PM »
Displacement:
1924: 932 tons (standard)  1,298 tons (full load)

Length: 92.6 m

Beam: 8.65 m

Draught: 3.52 m

Propulsion: 2 shaft geared steam turbines (from Brown, Boveri & Cie, Vulcan and Schichau), 3 boilers, 25,500 shp

Speed: 35.2 knots (65.2 km/h)

Range: 2,000 nmi (3,700 km) at 17 knots (31 km/h)

Complement: 120 - 129

Armament:
3 × 10.5 cm L/45 (3x1)
 2 × 2 cm Flak L/65 (1×1) (4 or 7 from 1940)
 6 × 500 (533 from 1931) mm torpedo tubes (2×3)
 30 mines

I think that this would be a good addition to the game. Would provide us a more heavily armed boat that would be capable of attacking a port, doing some real damage to a CV without torpedos, and would be able to engage the Elco 80' we have now from beyond range of retaliation.

Could provide artillery fire to costal bases, and would also let us see how larger, more heavily-armed player controlled ships would perform. Imagine it as a test of something like a Destroyer Escort.

You are talking about the 1924 Raubvogel Torpedo boats? These were old and out of date but the time war started. Yes there were improvments to the armament, but even after that they where poorly defended against air attack.

The last of the class that had the most updates before being sunk in 1944 was Jaguar. Its armament was
12,7 cm L/45:                    3 (since 1932)
10,5 cm L/45 C/32:            3 (until 1932)
2 cm Flak L/65 C/39:          2 (8 since 1942/43)
53,3 cm Torpedo Tubes:     6 (since 1931)
50 cm Torpedo Tubes:        6 (unitl 1931)
Mines:                               30

Only 1 boat of this class had more then 3x12.7mm and 2x20mm guns for AA.

This would be a slow moving, large target for almost any aircraft to bomb/torp/gun down.

I was always a fan of the S-100 myself.  It just looks tough.  I think it used diesels as well.

Just something to give players a bit more long-range bite, without being tied to the CV or shore batts, ya know?

Are you kidding?

1298 Tons?

3x 105mm Guns?

Mines?

These aren't Torpedoe Boats...these are small Destroyer class vessels (Corvette/Frigate/Destroyer Escort).

The S-Boats I could see and agree with, as they are not so different from the Elco boats we already have...but not independent destroyers.

Nice try.

Imagine what a horrible idea that would be. The guns can fire from around a sector away. So, yeah..... not good.

I mean 105's or 127mm's would be fine. Its not like they would be able to kill hangers real effectively or anything. But one salvo from a battleship, and target down.

Hmmm, the days of Battlefield 1942, where you blasted tiny men into orbit with a cruiser. And you got to steer the boat too.

Hey, we have the air and ground war covered (well, for the most part),why not add in more depth to naval battles? Fully controllable ships (with perked prices of course), available only on the larger maps (Trinity, ndisle, the last two we just had), and players can use them as they see fit.

All that needs to be changed is the ports spawn points, which shouldn't be too hard. Hell, turn the port's dock into a re arm station for ships. All ships will be fully controllable (except for the CV), with controls just like the PTboat we have now. WASD to move (albeit slowly, the larger the ship, the more time it takes to pull off a maneuver), 1-9 to switch to gun positions on a ship. Good god, do you know how epic it would be to have a naval "furball" or a huge armada sailing to the other country's strats and the massive battle that would follow?

And the best part, airplanes still dominate the arena like they did in real life. If players don't stick with a CVgroup, they'll get torn apart by bombers.

Imagine how a taking of a coastal airfield would play out. You have a group of 20 people in ships (battleships to destroyers) shelling the town and field. You have another 20 guys on the ground trying to take control of the town, the attackers trying to get an M3 in, the defender trying to protect the map room. You have a epictastic furball near the field, trying to protect goons or trying to kill the goons. Then, all of a sudden, the defenders brings in a CV group along with 20 guys in ships. Huge naval battle happens, attackers becomes defenders and vice versa.

OMFG, HTC, make this happen NOW. I want to have a naval furball!!!

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

When did the Japanese build the Bismarck?  It mounted 15 inch guns, the Yamato class mounted 18.1 inch.

The problem with the Raubvogel Torpedo boats is the lack of any real AA defenses, in game it would be very vulnerable from air attack.
