WHAT the heck were they thinking?????
« on: November 09, 2012, 06:11:25 PM »
 when they wrote this??

EGR SYSTEM MONITOR DRIVE CYCLE INSTRUCTIONS

Do not turn off the ignition switch during the test procedure.
All Onboard Diagnostic Monitors are cleared when the battery is disconnected or when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is cleared with the Scan Tool.
This drive cycle can be used to determine if the Readiness code for this Monitor will complete, and if the MIL will remain off after the vehicle is driven.
Operating Ranges: When a range of values is provided, try to operate the vehicle in the middle of the range. For example, if the vehicle speed range calls for 45-55 mph, drive the vehicle as close as possible to 50 mph. If the engine speed should be 1,000-2,000 rpm, try to operate the engine at 1,500 rpm.
Scan Tool Data: There are certain Parameter Identification (PID) values that must be within range before this Monitor will "run". It can be helpful to pull up those PID items on the Scan Tool so an assistant can view them during testing.

EGR SYSTEM MONITOR PRETEST CONDITIONS

    MIL is off
No Emission related DTC's are present
Accessories turned off (A/C, fan motor, head lights and rear window defroster)
BARO sensor signal more than 76 kPa
ECT sensor signal more than 170ºF
IAT sensor signal more than 41ºF
Gear selector switch indicating Drive position
    Overdrive (O/D) switch indicating "on"

TEST PROCEDURE

Connect the Scan Tool to the data link connector (DLC). Turn the key on and bring up the ECT PID on the Scan Tool. Use the Scan Tool to clear any stored DTC's and to reset the Onboard Diagnostic Monitors.
Start the engine and allow it to run until the ECT PID reaches at least 180ºF.
Accelerate at part-throttle to 38 mph and maintain that speed for at least 90 seconds. Then decelerate with the throttle completely closed to a speed of 18 mph. Do not apply the brakes, turn the steering wheel or turn on the head lights during the test period. Then accelerate back to 38 mph and remain that speed for another 20 seconds. Then decelerate again with the throttle completely closed to a speed of 18 mph. Bring the vehicle to a stop in a safe place, but do not turn off the ignition key.
Check the status of the Readiness code for the EGR System Monitor. It should change to YES. If it does, perform any additional driving under the conditions required to run the remainder of the monitors. If the Readiness code does not change to YES, check for any Pending codes in the Generic OBD II section of the Scan Tool. If no Pending codes are set, and the status did not change to YES, return to step 3 and repeat the test procedure.

and we generally try to do this on the road. i mean......REALLY??

I would assume they would have wanted the vehicle on a rolling road?

i used to have a dyno to do this stuff on, but it's old, and no parts available anymore.

most shops can't afford to have dyno's to do this stuff on.

Try to this on a busy NJ highway........ :bhead :bhead :bhead

NOTE: To perform drive cycle, drive the vehicle on a level road surface.

1.Depress vehicle brake pedal (do not use parking brake).

2.Shift to Drive.

3.Wait 15 seconds.

4.Shift to Reverse.

5.Wait 2 seconds.

6.Repeat (1-5) ten (10) times.

7.Accelerate from a stop with light throttle to 15 mph (24 km/h).

8.Brake gently to a complete stop (allow at least 6 seconds).

9.Repeat steps (7-8) five (5) times in dealership parking lot or similar setting.

10.Accelerate from a stop with light throttle performing 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts maintaining 1700-2000 rpm.

11.Accelerate to a speed between 50 mph (80 km/h) and 65 mph (104 km/h), achieve 6th gear, keep throttle steady with engine below 3000 rpm for a minimum of two (2) minutes.

12.Repeat step 11 two (2) times.

13.Test drive the vehicle.
