14 ORAE Hurricane Mk II

This Hurricane Mk II was flown by 14 ORAE (Independent Reconnaissance Squadron) of the VVS on the Moscow front in the winter of 1942/43. It has had a coat of Mk 7 white paint applied to the upper surfaces which has been worn away in places by blown dirt, liquid spills, the hot exhaust and the groundcrew. The original aircraft was either a Mk IIA or B with its original armament replaced by two 12.7mm and two 20mm soviet guns, plus six rocket rails. I've skinned the panel lines as a IIB but with the outer gun ports covered and the IIA armament selected.

I have a question about the exhaust staining. Why does the stain get cut off with such a defined line as it passes under the plane. wouldn't there be a bit of a carry over from the wing-roots causing allot of noise or turbulence around that area?

Or did they just keep the underside really clean?

The Hurricane's rear fuselage has a "D" shaped cross section with squareish lower corners. The whole lower part of the fuselage could be unbolted for access. There is a good photo of this at this site showing the Finnish Hurricane's restoration.

The high contrast between the white and the exhaust stained area is partly due to the white paint being stripped off there by the hot exhaust. The exhaust staining itself is fairly weak from the cockpit back.

The underside of Hurricanes generally received a fair bit of oil staining from the engine as Merlins were fairly leaky engines. Also there was the mud thrown up by the propeller and tyres. I'll consider increasing this staining a bit before I submit it.
