A vulnerability for smf was discovered and released on December 16th:  http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=492786.0

These 'hackers' find out about it and just execute the exploit on as many out of date forums as they can.  Assuming this is how the site was compromised.

Takes only one to figure it out, and many to copy it.

Not related.  The WEB server is at one ISP, while the BBS is at another ISP, and the game servers are at another ISP.

The WEB server is the only one impacted by this.

when I click on "webpage help" it comes up on internet explorer "404 not found" or something like that so I have to go back into my history and find it

If it came from Brazil, check the ip addresses for "tabahost" and see if they are similar addresses.
