Headset auto muting?

Since starting AH and using a headset I end up having to plug and unplug the headset to use the PC speakers.  Anybody know of a windows setting that would not auto mute the speakers?  I know I don't have to plug the earphones in but I use them since my family might be in the same room listing to something else.  I don't think there is one but I thought I would ask.

It depends. At least the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel has a tick box for muting the rear output jacks when a front phone plug is detected. Unticked, the same sound would come from both and if you wished to save your family's ears you'd simply not turn the speakers on. On my trusty old Gigabyte EP-35 the setting is hidden on the Audio I/O tab's Analog/Backplate section behind a tiny wrench symbol.

The problem comes usually when using a USB headset. That won't get detected on windows and the only way to switch audio sources is to open the mixer/sound devices and switch them manually.

In my experience the sounds drivers usually install an applet to the control panel that will allow you to select/deselect jack sensing.

Here is a link to find the setting on the Realtek audio manger.  The icon is not labeled and a bit obscure but there just as you said.
