246 IAP Hurricane Mk IID
« on: January 12, 2013, 06:47:34 AM »
The Soviet Union received 45 Hurricane Mk IIDs from Britain in 1943/44. The VVS weren't happy about the lack or armour so they didn't see much frontline use. This example from 246 IAP was based in Azerbaijan and was crash landed in 1944.

I find it somewhat ironic that the Soviets who were so careless with how they spent the lives of their men didn't like the Hurri IId because it lacked armor while the Brits who seemed to have more concern for the lives of their fighting men.

To be fair the RAF made the same complaint about the IID as well. The plane just lacked the power to carry those guns and a decent amount of armour. Also the VVS had the Il-2 which could do a better job of close support.
