Seeking Advice on Router firmware
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:46:31 PM »
I am in the process of upgrading my home network and plan on using a router such as the Linksys E4200. I am aware that this can have it's firmware flashed to use DD-WRT. So what benefit would this offer if any and does anyone here use it without issues when running Aces High?

FYI I have a seperate cable modem so the router is a stand alone item.

Edit: Oops! - just realised this really ought to be in the hardware/software section - No doubt Skuzzy will move   ;)

Don't remember my model offhand, but my linksys router was a piece of trash before I flashed it with ddwrt. Now it is stable and allows considerable customizations above and beyond a home class router.

I installed on my netgear router.  it seems to connect faster.  but not only that, I found on the netgear firmware if the router lost power then upon rebooting it would broadcast wifi on an open network.  this was annoying as I wouldnt notice if the power went out when I was not at home.  I turned the power off/on on the router with the dd-wrt firmware and wifi stays secured.

I just did the firmware last night so I am still trying to figure out all the settings.  but my tv that is on the next room does connect twice as fast.  one word of advise, make sure you remember the password when you flash the firmware that will remove the original firmware and install a basic firmware or you will spend a couple of hours trying to figure out what is wrong.  once you enter the password then you will be able to access and install the new dd-wrt firmware.  and make sure you get the correct firmware or you will need to get another router :0.

like semp says, if you flash you router and its wrong for somereason or another you could brick your router. I have a cisco and not even sure what model it is anymore. Actually its been really good. I was going to flash, but guess have found no reason to.
