need help reworking an old map
« on: February 23, 2013, 08:53:55 PM »
I am about to embark on a great crusade...   :uhoh

Actually, there is a map that has lain dormant for years that I would like to finish.  Skuzzy told me a while back that it had too many fields to be accepted as a MA map, so I was wondering if there was a simple way to delete all the fields.  It would probably be easier than to change all the numbers for the ones that were left.

You could open the oba file in notepad and delete every thing in it, or just the lines starting with and "F".
Deleting every thing would be the safest then you would not end up having zone issues

Thank you sir, that did the trick.

Next problem - the town has a radar circle, but the bases don't:   :bhead

Operator error, no doubt.  Should I just scrub the oba file clean and start over a second time?  :lol

Also, the radar circles have been reset to a 12.5 mile radius but every time I close and reopen the TE, the circles are back at 5 miles.  How do you save the radius setting and is 12.5 miles the same as in the MAs?  This helps with having a proper spacing of fields.

Thanks.

1- That's a 64x64 terrain, so the only arena you could/would see that used is in the AvA.  We AvAers love new terrains, so it would get used.

2- Seeing as that's as far as you've gotten on the redo, I highly suggest starting over completely, in a sense.  The TE can be an evil monster when you delete of move around too many things and will throw glitches & problems back at you just to get revenge on ya.  If I were you, I would start a brand new terrain, but take the elevation .bpm, grndtype.bmp & waterd.bmp and transfer them over to use in the new terrain.  That will give you all of your land/water & elevations back without any leftover problems from deleting all of your old fields & such.  The entire process would take about 5 minutes.  This is just what I would do & recommend.  Good luck!

That's a good idea.  Thanks.

BTW, it's the same size as a standard small MA map, like CraterMA.  Ironically, that map only has 2 less fields than mine did before I erased them.  :(

Ahh I see.  The first CBM pic made it look like a 64x64 terrain. :salute

Be sure field 1 is set to zone 1, field 2 is set to zone 2 and field 3 is set to zone 3. All others after that it doesn't matter.
This is a must for things to work properly.

That's news to me.  Thanks again.

Next issue is my unfamiliarity with the newest Terrain Editor, specifically the Elevations:

The last time I worked on the map, it looked like this:

I did the basic elevations with Gimp but was doing the fine tuning (trying to soften the sharp edges - which was incredibly tedious and time consuming) by clicking the raise or lower buttons on each altitude point.  "Clickclickclickclickclickclic kclickclickclick...."  for weeks on end and still aren't done.  Especially after I did have it almost done and somehow lost the elevation map in a computer change over.  :bhead   The whole map is nothing but narrow, intersecting canyons with altitudes from 0-5k in close proximity, so there are many, many mouse clicks in my future.  :uhoh

Could you guys save me some legwork and point me to the textbook that covers the new version?  :D

Well unfortunately I haven't finished the TE manual.  I know I know bad mrmidi but I am working on it.

Give me a little bit and I'll give you some info unless some one else post first.

Looking forward to it, sir.  :salute

Meantime, I will be using the old version TE:  "clickclickclickclickclickclic kclickclickclick..."

That would make a good Snickers commercial.  "Not going anywhere for a while?"   :lol
