Hey I'm some guy on the internet who you don't really know.  Can you give me operational details on you and your unit's deployment plans?  While you're at it, send your name, address, full SSN, birthdate, mothers maiden name, and where you park your car while you're deployed.  And does your wife have a gun at home, and does she know how to use it while you're away?

Nothing personal about the OP but to a couple of the people who responded... really?  Remember that briefing where they told you to expect people asking for stuff on the CIL (critical information list) and what to do when asked?  Come on.  Seriously, WTF.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Don't pay any attention to him, he's probably a spy. Send your details to me, after all I'm a foreign guy on the internet. You can trust me completely. I won't pass any information onto my friends at a certain foreign embassy. :salute

My thoughts exactly when it came to the "soon deploying" part.
Like, ya know, when that thing that makes you move, it has pistons and things, When your thingamajigy is providing power, you do not hear other peoples thingamajig when they are providing power.

Possibly headed to Bahrain for the Coast Guard next year if the papers get through but that's a long time from now. Keeping the fingers crossed.

as for the military being a stupid choice..

For someone just out of high school with no prospect of a scholarship ride thru college
and tired of fast food/manual labor 'careers' ..it is a way to bootstrap yourself and you *will* learn more than you bargained for.

Do the research, find out which branch offers the best incentives in the area that interests you.
Talking to a recruiter is exactly like dealing with a shady car dealer .. talk to the guys who are in.

The other career choice is earn a college degree while workin at McDonalds or Wal-Mart ..
*then* start the career you want, use the heck outta the school job counselors, hit every opening with your best shot.

Or ..can go Armed Forces as an officer once you have a degree.
In the USAF it was 6 months to Lootenant then a year to Captain and 2 years to Major
..provided you did not step on any land mines (like punching out your Wing Commander or some such)
..then its up to you to really jam if you want to go further.

The biggest problem with the military is, the Peter Principle is alive and well.
People in it rise to the level of their incompetence ..you meet some real losers along the way..
..and some you have to actually pay attention to.
The absolute best way to deal with them is make the next rank and tell 'em to f-off.
Worked for me -evil grin-

Only better ..I'd start in high school and ask the girl out! -grin-
Can only imagine if I had a do-over knowing what I know now.

As for what service is best ..well .. my dad was in Patton's 3rd
..he told me flat out if I enlisted in the Army he would kill me.
I beleived him altho I was kinda enamored about goin into Armor (they offered 1500 dollar sign on just for that back then)

So I flipped a coin, USAF or Navy .. USAF won.
Then talked to some guys who were in ..they told me of the 6-year enlistment, guaranteed career field sign on.
Had no idea about a career but the recruiter said electronic warfare systems tech,
if I passed the tests,
would teach me how to put speakers in my car.
That was the only question I asked him ..LOL.
I passed the tests.
-grin-

The six year enlistment meant I was a two striper out of basic and an NCO (3 stripes) a year later.
That helped a LOT since I was married with a daughter when I enlisted.
Still ..it would have been better to have gone in as officer material ..far better standard of living.
IMHO.
