Just for the comedy factor, I've always wanted to take a VW bug, and find a way to cram a V8 into it, even if I have to rip out the back seats.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

Tank Ace .. I actually assisted in a guys project to do just that.

Took a '56 chebby frame, sectioned it, used a very stout 396 rectangle port Rat motor w/fenderwell headers..
..turbo 400 auto tranny, 12 bolt rear w/4:56's in it ..and just welded up the body mounts to drop the bug body onto it.

The front end was welded together so it could tilt forward.. coupla holes drilled for airflow to the radiator.

It *worked*

Scary as hell when he punched it ..if it hooked the front wheels would come off the ground..
..if it spun the tires you had to be fast because it wanted to swap ends NOW baby!

Was kept in primer by the owner-builder, happened in the auto shop at George AFB ..1977 or so.
He useda tell me he would blow the doors off my Duster ..

I beleive he would have if he had put wheelie bars on it with some slicks.
It was pure animal cracker :)

Nice, sounds like you had a blast that summer.

My current summer project is to SC my Cavalier's engine. Buddy of mine has most of the parts we'd need to bring the engine up to specs from a totaled one that was supercharged.

Come to that, still haven't put in the sound system I have for it.

We brought a corvette as well that went around 250mph.

The super abrasive concrete is key to putting down the horsepower as well as a "boost by gear" system that we run instead of traction control.

We also saw a hangar full of F104s that were all in flyable condition.
