DSL modem
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:50:27 AM »
I currently have a ZyXEL prestige 600 series modem.  It has been causing me problems for a few months now.  Several times  a day I have to reboot it to get it to work.  The modem will work a few hours, then seems to slow down, then all the sudden just quit and the dsl activity light will not flash.

Is it time for a new modem or is there something that can be fixed with a setting or two somewhere?  And if I decide to get a new modem, what would be a good one to get?

Is a new modem, If I buy it myself instead of letting ip provide it, plug and play so to speak?

They don't last forever, that's for sure. Of all the brands and models amongst my clients the P600 series seems to be the first to go to the waste bin, but to be honest, it usually takes several years. So, if you have used yours more than three years, consider the modem having earned its retirement.

I can't suggest you any brand, since the sortiment or brand names may be different in your country.

As an educated guess I suppose they would mostly be plug and play, although I've also seen some models ready configured for only one ISP. The package should tell you if a modem has preconfigured settings for multiple ISP's, including yours. Rather than hunting for the best internet offer, buy one at your local shop, they should know.

When I had DSL, a modem would burn out approximately every 14 months. So, every 12 months I renewed my contract and made sure I asked for a new modem each time; it kept my subscription price lower and I had extra hardware on hand to use.

When my modems did burn out, they often did something similar to what you're finding, Rondar.

Well, after fairpoint , my ISP provider, just literally refused to believe that it could possibly be a modem problem (and thus not have to provide me with a replacement modem),  I bought a cheap dsl modem.  They kept insisting it was a dirty line problem, and of course the bad lines were in my house.  This netgear modem for 49 bucks has fixed all my problems and my download speed is faster than it ever was.

I wish I had a choice of providers but only other option is to go wireless with a radio transmitter and receiver.  At least what I have is not disclosing several times a night, or just freeze for a while, like 10 to 30 minutes.  I couldn't even surf the web without rebooting several times a night.

Ps.  Should I call my ISP and tell them I cleaned the wires in the house with Lysol?   :lol:rofl. And now they are not dirty anymore  :O. Lol

call them back and tell them you are gonna cancel their account and go with internet cable or something else.  I'll bet they will send you a new modem.

I asked for a free one a couple of years ago as mine was quite old.  they wanted me to pay 100 bucks for it.  told them to stuff it.  then called to cancelled which routed me to customer retention.  they wanted to give a new mode.  I got it and a couple of weeks later I cancelled the account anyway.  cable internet cost about the same as dsl and it is much faster in my area.

I have had 2 Zyxel modems and they were both utter crap. The second model that I bought promised all sorts of fancy things but when I plugged it in it started freezing. I looked at the logs and it started to treat online game traffic as an attack lol. And the best thing was that there was no option to turn the 'feature' off.

So check your logs, you may see a huge load of 'attacks' originating to online game servers.

This is indicative of power issues tbh.
