There fall/winter of '72 for Infantry AIT.  Pretty much sucked due to the cadre - bunch of anal cavities.

Yup been there during that time of year. You are in for a real treat if you like it hot and humid. If you would like to acclimatize a bit find a gym that has a wet sauna and live in it. I am not kidding either. Figure on temps up to over 100 at time with humidity about 90% or more. There is an office that has a secondary job of monitoring heat and humidity. When the wet bulb gets to over the red line they shut down outside training and shift to inside training. They do NOT round up either. If it gets to within 1/10 of a degree of going over the line they do not change the schedule a bit. I know because I was in a part of that office for a spell when I was there for a TDY of at least 6 weeks a couple of years.

Later on in the Sept through Oct time frame, it is the prime hurricane season in that area so you might have some interesting experiences then as well.

In all seriousness I'd spend some real quality time getting in shape right now. Start running up to 5 miles at a stretch. Tons of pushups, crunches, pullups and other basic calisthenics. With the heat and humidity, being there out of shape and having to work out will be a real ball buster.

Oh man, we zonies don't know what humidity is...I suggest you plan accordingly, like move to the most humid place you can find asap.

I am from AZ too, born and raised there, lived there for a half century and worked outside during the summer on the street. Trust me, you do NOT understand the difference between dry heat and the humid heat you will be experiencing. I would much rather spend the day working outside in Tucson or Phoenix than at Ft. Jackson, San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans etc. Sweating in the SW cools you off. Sweating in the humid areas just makes you wet and you are still just as hot and getting hotter. You will soak your uniform just stepping outside without working in the summer at Ft. Jackson. A temp of 95 degree with the 90%+ humidity is like 120+ in AZ. When it tops 100 there, and it does, the humidity also stays the same.

You will learn grasshopper, you WILL learn.

What Maverick said.  If you're used to dry heat, humid heat is just a completely different horrible, horrible thing.

Good luck, Just be where you need to be, in the right uniform at the right time. Stay motivated, Even if its false motivation, use it. Before you go, learn how to eat a small meal in a very short period of time (1-2min max). I would always take my food and put it on bread, doesn't even matter what it was (i'd throw pasta or whatever and make it into a sandwhich) saves time. We literally had less then 2 min most of the time while i was in Infantry OSUT. So practice that. Make sure your PT is good. Don't quit and you'll do fine. Can't be any worse then Ft Benning in July

and what MOS are you going for?
