I like this idea. But can it be expanded like what ATC radar screens show today. Dont know if it would be to gamey. It would look like this

Why, it would be easier to move the mouse over the name and instantly get that information, then going that route.

Thoughts....

you will only be able to see the id of single dots way off all by themselves.  if there's a bunch of guys near a base you wont be able to see anything.  even with the mapped zoomed in in a furball you wont be able to tell who's who.

now imagine if you are in a bomber and trying to figure out where the town is and all you see is a bunch of letters all around base/town but cant tell where either is.

Move the cursor off the green dots and Voila!  Clutter gone.
