The last hero of Telemark
« on: April 26, 2013, 04:20:03 AM »
I frikken *hate* snow...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22298739

Interesting there was such a level of concern as early as '43.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

Interesting read.  Actually got out the foil cap for a min there, then put it away.

One of the few heroes still with us.

I'm curious how old are you? Reason I ask is this is a fairly well known episode in WW2, and I'm wondering whether that history is slipping by kids these days (much as my generation lost the nuances of WW1).

A very brave raid. It was later found that the Nazies were no where near building the bomb and the war would have ended anyway without them building it. Of course, in 1942 nobody knew how long the war would last and exactly how far they were from building a bomb, so every delay was deemed important.

This reminds us of todays Iran that suffers a series of sabotages to its nuclear program in an effort to delay it. The difference is that there are no ground forces on the way to Tehran that need more time to get there before the bomb is complete. The current actions just delay the inevitable.

A 1973 documentary about the raid, also featuring Mr. Rønneberg, and other SOE agents and resistance members no longer with us:
