I purchased several sections of C-47 engine cowlings a short time ago. My plan was to put WWII nose art on them and hang them in my garage. While cleaning this cowling, I found that the original olive drab paint was in good enough shape to use.
Since the cowlings are from radial engines, I decided to focus on nose art from P-47s. For the first one, I am doing Don Gentile’s P-47 “Donnie Boy”.
More people know about Gentile’s P-51 called “Shangri-La”, but he also flew a Spitfire and P-47. All of his aircraft featured the same boxing eagle. But the P-47 was called “Donnie Boy” and the spitfire was called “Buckeye Don”.
Here the white nose band has been added and the outline of the nose art has been applied.
I have to give a lot of the credit to my daughter, she is doing the detail work.
I’ll post a photo of the finished work.
I want the 2nd cowling to face the opposite direction. I’m thinking about the logo and cowling colors from the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron. Any other suggestions?
