This was just a quick minute and a half fight but it turned out to be a great white knuckle fight. This 38 pilot really pushed me to my limit in the vertical/stall and it made for a great fight. <S> to you sir for the best fight of the day/month thus far.
Okay, so the lead up:
Buzurd and I are headed back to base with two planes trailing after a long sortie. Buzurd had dropped his external tanks a little before me and was running on fumes so I was supporting his exit. the first plane broke off the trail but a determined P38 pilot with altitude continued to push onto us. Unsure that Buzurd would make the base if the 38 caught both of us, I climbed to the 38's altitude and prepared to engage:
