Came across an excellent article on the transport of the blackbirds to Area 51.  (Lots of photos at the end)

Enjoy!

My grandfather actually had the opportunity to go to Area 51 during his Air Force career.  He was a navigator on an RB-47.  From what he told me, him and a bus load of other Air Force personell were put on a bus with completely blacked out windows and drove for roughly 5 hours.  When they stopped, armed men boarded the bus from both ends checking their papers.  Then they unloaded the bus inside the hangars with the SR-71s, they did their thing, and got back on the bus.  I never could get him to tell me exactly what they did, or how long they were there.  :noid   I also never have been able to get him to spill the beans on what they took pictures of over the USSR flying out of Incirlik AFB in Turkey.  :noid :noid

He also told me that the easiest way to tell the difference between a CIA Sr-71 and a USAF Sr-71.  The difference is that the CIA bird would have an army of ground crew in white lab coats inspecting every single bolt before takeoff.  The USAF bird had just a crew chief and a hammer.

I wasnt aware we ever stationed 71s at Incirlik. We sure didnt when I was there ; We had a hard enough time even getting permission for the tankers, with JP-7, to be allowed to refuel them.

No he was on an RB-47 at Incirlik.  He did something with the 71s at area 51.  Never knew what though.

Oh. Yeah it was before my time but yes we once had B-47s there. I wish I could have seen them fly. I bet The 'Lick was little changed when I was there compared to when your Gramps was there. I look at pictures of the base and Adana today and hardly even recognize it. Back then it was a crummy little goat herding town. The base was a crap hole tho we managed to have a great time. Im sure your gramps remembers Efe's Pilson beer. The Brewry was right in town and we had the Beer man like the old milk man who would deliver to all us drunks.

Circa '78. I was at the end of the runway watching the air army coming in after those fundamentalists over ran our embassy in Tehran. Carter ended up not sending us but when this photo was taken we were told we were on stand by to go in.
